Nicole and David walked along the lines of games and rides. A few times she noticed stray shadows and unfriendly faces in the crowd that pulled her mind to thoughts of attack and survival, but David’s calm presence by her side was enough to silence most of the unease in her chest. The feel of his arm under her hand reminded her she was protected. She wasn’t alone. She could relax and enjoy the night and the company. Nicole munched on her cotton candy and studied the pictures she’d won at the darts and balloons booth. It had always been her favorite fairground game, and she was pretty good at it, as revealed by the three pictures she’d won. They were beautiful, each one portraying some magical scene.
