Possessive Men

Mina’s POV The silence after Adrian refused to hand the phone back felt unbearable. I could hear Ethan breathing through the speaker. Heavy. Angry. And somehow that frightened me more than yelling ever did. Ethan’s temper always became dangerous when he sounded calm. “You think you know her already?” Ethan asked quietly. Adrian leaned casually against the counter, completely unbothered. “I know enough.” “No.” Ethan laughed softly. “You know the version she shows strangers.” A pause. “You don’t know how pathetic she gets when she’s crying.” Humiliation burned through my chest instantly. My fingers curled tightly at my sides. Ethan always did this. Whenever he felt cornered, he exposed private things just to hurt me. Adrian’s expression darkened slowly. “She cried because of you,” Adrian said quietly. “That’s what women do.” Ethan sounded amused now. “They cry, they forgive, they come back.” My stomach twisted painfully. Because once upon a time— I believed that too. I thought love meant enduring everything someone did to you. Cheating. Lying. Manipulation. I kept forgiving him because I thought staying proved loyalty. But staying only destroyed me. “Put Mina back on the phone,” Ethan demanded sharply. Adrian looked at me silently for a moment before handing the phone over. I hesitated before taking it. “…Ethan.” His voice immediately softened. Manipulative. Familiar. “There’s my girl.” The words no longer sounded comforting. Just controlling. “Why are you doing this?” I whispered. “Doing what?” “You disappeared.” “You cheated.” “You left me with debt.” “And now suddenly you care where I am?” Silence. Then Ethan sighed like I was being unreasonable. “You know I was stressed.” I stared at the floor in disbelief. Stressed. That was his excuse. Not guilt. Not apology. Stress. “I needed time to think.” “You slept with another woman.” “It didn’t mean anything.” The pain in my chest returned instantly despite everything. Not because I still loved him. Because betrayal always leaves scars even after love dies. “You embarrassed me,” I whispered shakily. Ethan went quiet. Then his tone darkened slightly. “You’re embarrassing me right now too.” “With him.” Fear flickered briefly through me. That possessiveness again. That obsession. “You don’t get to control me anymore.” The silence afterward felt dangerous. Then Ethan laughed softly. “You really think some rich guy wants you long-term?” My throat tightened painfully. “He’s bored, Mina.” “Men like him don’t date girls like you seriously.” The words hit harder than I wanted to admit. Because deep down— part of me feared he was right. Adrian noticed my expression immediately. And something cold entered his eyes. “You know what your problem is?” Ethan continued quietly. “You always need someone to save you.” Before I could respond— Adrian suddenly took the phone from my hand again. Fast. Controlled. And terrifyingly calm. “You’ve mistaken emotional damage for ownership,” Adrian said softly into the speaker. “That ends now.” Ethan laughed bitterly. “And what are you to her exactly?” Adrian looked directly at me. The intensity in his gaze made my heartbeat stumble. Then— “She’s under my protection.” Silence. Heavy silence. Even I froze. Protection. Nobody had ever described me that way before. Not fragile. Not needy. Not difficult. Protected. Ethan sounded furious now. “You don’t even know her.” “I know enough to understand she deserved better than you.” “You think she’s innocent?” Ethan’s voice sharpened mockingly. “She begged me to stay after every fight.” “She couldn’t survive without me.” Tears burned unexpectedly behind my eyes. Not because it was true— but because I hated that I once allowed him to believe it. Adrian noticed instantly. His jaw tightened dangerously. Then his voice lowered into something terrifyingly calm. “If you ever speak to her like that again…” Even Ethan went silent. Because suddenly— Adrian Vale sounded genuinely dangerous. “…what?” Ethan asked coldly. Adrian smiled faintly. “I’ll make you regret remembering her name.” The threat settled heavily into the room. My heartbeat pounded violently. Because Adrian didn’t sound emotional. He sounded certain. And somehow— that frightened Ethan too. The line disconnected abruptly. Silence filled the penthouse instantly. I stared at the broken tension in the air while trying to steady my breathing. Then Adrian slowly looked at me. And the terrifying thing? The anger in his eyes disappeared immediately. Softened. Only for me. “You shouldn’t let him speak to you that way,” he murmured quietly. I laughed weakly under my breath. “You make it sound easy.” Adrian walked closer slowly. Close enough for me to notice the faint scar near his jaw. Close enough to smell expensive cologne and cigarette smoke. “No,” he admitted softly. “I know it isn’t easy.” Something vulnerable flickered briefly across his expression. Then his hand lifted carefully toward my face. Slow enough for me to pull away if I wanted. I didn’t. His thumb brushed gently beneath my eye, catching a tear before it could fall. Warm. Careful. “You don’t belong to him anymore, Mina.” My breath caught sharply. Because for the first time in years— I wanted to believe someone. And Adrian Vale looked at me like he’d destroy anyone who made me cry again. That should’ve terrified me. Instead— it made me feel safe. And maybe that was the most dangerous thing of all.
