Grace hurried to the her class, she just finished work and accidentally left her wallet inside her car so she had wasted another 10 minutes to go downstairs and get her wallet. She rushed in and saw all her classmates and Professor look at her in disbelief
"Hello Miss Wells, glad to have you" Professor Hemlock, his brown eyes staring at her in disappointment
" Me too" she muttered. She heard the class laugh and she realised what she just said "I mean I'm glad I arrived in such a untimely matter. Hah. Whats 10 minutes right?"
"Punctuality is not quite existent in your vocabulary" he snorted
Grace took a glimpse on this grey thread behind his back, it was a bit distorted so she figured his soul mate already passed away. It was like this, whether or not an individual would meet his soul mate, the "One" to complete him but if they passed it meant the thread is broken and had a different color. She didn't want to ask if his wife or girlfriend passed because he seemed like a closed book. After 2 grueling hours, the class was done
"What was that?" Kath asked "You've been late exactly 10 minutes everyday, is it hard to adjust it to like... 0 minutes?"
"I try but it's always been like this" Grace replied with contempt
Suddenly her phone rang, she shut it off and sighed
"When will you ever talk to your mom and dad?" Kath asked with sincerity
" I'm still thinking about it"
" You can't be upset forever Grace"
It's been almost 2 years of cold silence towards her parents ever since the accident, it wasn't their fault it happened but she blamed herself nevertheless of being stubborn before and this has shaped her to what she is now.
Grace bid Kath goodbye and started walking towards 7-11, as she entered she saw several people in line and observed their strings. She started smiling as she sees one young lad in line and a young girl was also nearby with her mother asking for Doritos, they were soulmates. She watched the golden thread was dancing and its bright colors attached on their backs connected and in tune. It was amazing that you meet the "One" in a ordinary place but will meet again on a special day. That was her gift, to see these gold, gray and red threads around her, this happened after the bus accident 2 years ago on the field trip but she tried to bury the memories.
As she arrived in her small apartment, she sighed deeply and started reading books that was just around the corner of her shelf then suddenly the phone call again MOM was on the screen. She didn't want to answer but they wouldn't stop, she picked up the phone
"Yes mom" she says coldly even though she missed hearing her mom's voice
"Sweetie!" she can hear her Dad's shoes running towards the phone
"Thanks for paying my rent"
"Of course, you work so hard to get to college, this is what we can do for you"
"Ok"
there was a long pause.
" Sweetie, come home soon." her mom's voice was almost pleading " It's been too long since you left"
"I can't face them..."
"It's been 2 years, there's no resentment"
"Mom don't start, people died..."
" We can't change the past sweetie, and your brother is here"
Grace gripped her phone hard with shock "What? Lukas is back?"
"Yes sweetie, last week..." her mom's voice trailed off, then she says softly "He has leukemia".
Grace couldn't believe what she was hearing, her sweetest brother has Leukemia? He didn't deserve this disease, he was the world to her, the only person who understood her anxiety, her fears and everything that stands between her and the world. It sounds cliche but no one really understood her problems as a teenager, she felt alone and she didn't trust people around her due to the fact that she comes from an aristocratic family. Her mother always warned her that her family has been used and abused by the media but now she has been doubtful as she tasted the world outside of the comfort of her home. She stood there crestfallen while looking at her brother's pictures.
"Thanks for telling me mom" she muttered
"Honey, you can pay him a visit he's here in Plain Meadows and he tells us everyday he misses you. I have your room ready-"
"-Mom" she cuts her off "I'll think about it okay, I can't make any promises." she was already shaking
"I understand honey but remember, Plain Meadows will always be your home"
Plain Meadows was where she grew up and went to school and she still cannot forget about the accident that happened for 2 years ago which leaves scars on her memories. She closed her eyes and imagined what she saw, again she was having whirlwind of memories as if she was there again.
"White Doves! 123 white Doves for the win!" the whole class cheered wildly
Grace was trying to take a video of the cheerleaders who were dancing inside the school bus
"Hey Wells! Send that to me okay?" one of the girls called out, Grace nods her had excitingly, she didn't know what to say since she has never associated herself to other people and they noticed her for once when she was recording them. Her heart bounced a bit as she watched other guys shouting and having a good time. She only hoped her mom would never see this mess or she will throw a fit. Then as she was about to press send everything went black, she couldn't remember anything afterwards. Then she felt rain on her skin as she opened her eyes, she could hear the siren and dogs barking around her. She tried to call for help but nothing came out. The rain starts pouring in and she could feel pain on her right leg, she could hear dogs coming near and barking. A wave of relief came in to her as she hears a voice
"We got a live one!"
