CHAPTER 4: THE TRUTH BEGINS TO UNFOLD

Kael stood frozen, his chest heaving. Every part of him screamed to reach for her—to pull her close, to beg for forgiveness—but pride and confusion held him back. “You have no right to stand here,” he grated out, though his voice lacked its usual command. “I cast you out.” “And who gave you the right to cast out the Moon Goddess’s chosen heir?” Elara shot back, taking one slow step forward. The silver pendant at her throat glowed so bright it cast pale light across the stone floor. “You ruled over me as if I belonged to you. But I was never yours to give away.” Selene stepped in front of him, hands trembling. “She speaks madness! Guards—arrest her at once!” Still no one moved. An old warrior near the front spoke up, his voice rough with doubt. “She walks like the old ones. Her light… it answers to the moon alone.” Panic flashed across Selene’s face. “Do not listen to her! She bewitched you!” “Did I bewitch you when you copied my handwriting?” Elara asked, her eyes locking onto her cousin’s. “When you wore my cloak to the border? When you planted coins and maps in my chambers? Did I bewitch you into stealing my mother’s crown?” Gasps rippled through the crowd. Kael’s head snapped toward Selene. “Is this true?” Selene’s eyes darted wildly. “No—she lies! She twists everything!” “Then explain this,” Elara said, and held out her hand. A sheet of parchment floated from her palm, glowing faintly. “The real letter Selene sent to Shadowclaw—offering them our lands… in exchange for me being gone forever.” It drifted straight to Kael. His hands shook as he unfolded it. The handwriting was unmistakably Selene’s—smaller, sharper than Elara’s, with a slant only her family knew. And the signature at the bottom sent cold dread through his veins. He looked up at Selene, his voice broken. “You did this… all of this… for power?” Selene’s mask crumbled. Tears spilled, but they were tears of rage, not grief. “Why should you have everything?” she screamed at Elara. “The Alpha, the crown, the love of everyone—while I was always just your shadow! I deserved this more than you ever did!” Kael staggered back as if struck. The pieces fell together one by one—the whispers, the forged proof, the way Selene had always been there, always pushing him further away from Elara. He had traded the real thing for a lie. He had destroyed the one person who would never have betrayed him. Elara watched him fall apart, and for a heartbeat, she felt a flicker of the old pain. But she crushed it down. “You believed what you wanted to believe,” she said, her voice steady. “You wanted an easy Luna. A quiet one. You never wanted me—the one who would stand beside you, not behind you.” She turned to the crowd, her voice ringing clear and strong. “I did not come back to beg for my place. I came back to take back what was stolen. And to see that justice is done.” Chaos erupted in the hall—but not against Elara. Selene screamed, lunging at Elara with bared claws, her wolf surging to the surface in a blind, desperate rage. “I will kill you! I will kill you and take everything you were born with!” Elara did not flinch. She raised one hand, and an invisible force slammed Selene back against the stone wall, pinning her there without a single touch. The silver light wrapped around Elara like armor, and her voice rang out, cold and absolute. “You wanted power so badly?” she said. “Then learn what true power actually is. It is not stolen. It is not won through lies. It is given only to those who know how to carry it.” Kael moved to stop her, then froze when Elara’s gaze snapped to him—sharp, warning, and utterly unyielding. “Do not,” she said quietly. “You gave up the right to decide my fate the day you rejected me.” The High Elder stepped forward, his hands trembling, his eyes fixed on the glowing pendant. “That mark… it is the First Luna’s sigil. We thought it lost to time. She is the true heir—she always was.” The crowd roared then, the sound shaking the rafters. Elara! Elara! The True Luna! Selene slid down the wall, sobbing now—not from remorse, but from the bitter taste of defeat. “I only wanted to be seen,” she whispered brokenly. “No one ever looked at me… not when you were there.” “Then you should have earned your own place,” Elara answered, her voice soft but unforgiving. “Instead of trying to steal mine.” Kael looked at Elara—really looked at her—and saw everything he had missed. The strength, the fire, the ancient right shining from her very bones. The woman he had cast away was not weak or traitorous. She was far greater than he had ever been worthy of. Regret crashed over him like a tidal wave, heavy and suffocating. “What do you command, True Luna?” the High Elder asked, bowing low before her. Elara looked at Selene, then at Kael, then out at the pack that had once turned its back on her. “Selene is stripped of all rank and title,” she said clearly. “She will be exiled to the edge of our lands, never to return. And anyone who helped her deceive this pack… will answer for it.” She paused, her gaze landing on Kael, and his heart shattered all over again at the emptiness in her eyes. “As for the Alpha…” she said, “He will answer for his crimes against me and against this pack. But not today. Today… we start over.”
