Chapter 17

The Shadow Looms The forest stood still, the silence pressing against Lila's ears as if the world itself was holding its breath. The pack’s patrols moved like shadows among the trees, their vigilance heightened by the rogue threat that loomed just beyond the border. Lila stayed close to Dante, her senses sharp despite the unease twisting in her gut. “What do they want now?” she whispered, her eyes scanning the darkness ahead. “They’re testing us,” Dante said, his voice low but steady. “The rogues thrive on chaos. If they sense weakness, they’ll exploit it.” “And if they don’t?” she asked, her hands tightening into fists. “Then they’ll create it.” The weight of his words hung between them as they continued their patrol. Around them, the forest seemed alive, every rustle and snap of a twig amplifying Lila’s tension. Despite Dante’s calm demeanor, she could feel his unease in the tightness of his movements, the way his golden eyes flicked toward every shadow. Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the trees, followed by another. The pack stopped, their ears perking, their bodies tensing as the growls grew louder. Lila felt her heart hammering in her chest as a group of wolves emerged from the shadows. They weren’t pack members. The rogues had crossed the border. Dante stepped forward, his body radiating authority. “You’re trespassing,” he said, his voice sharp and commanding. “Leave now, or you’ll regret it.” The rogue leader—a massive wolf with scarred fur and piercing red eyes—shifted into his human form, his lips curling into a mocking smile. “Regret it? That’s cute, Alpha,” he sneered. “We’re here to deliver a message.” “From who?” Dante growled. The rogue’s smile widened. “The Shadow Alpha.” At the mention of the name, a ripple of unease swept through the pack. Lila felt her stomach drop. The rogue leader’s gaze shifted to her, his eyes narrowing with predatory intent. “You must be the infamous half-bound,” he said, his voice dripping with disdain. “Our master has been waiting for you.” Lila didn’t flinch under his gaze, though fear coiled tightly in her chest. “What does he want?” “You, of course,” the rogue said. “But he’s willing to make an offer. Surrender yourself to him, and he’ll spare your precious pack.” “Not happening,” Dante snapped, his voice like a growl. “She belongs to this pack. If he wants her, he’ll have to come through me.” The rogue leader laughed, a harsh sound that sent shivers down Lila’s spine. “That’s exactly what he plans to do,” he said. “Consider this a warning, Alpha. The Shadow Alpha doesn’t make requests twice.” Without another word, the rogue leader shifted back into his wolf form and vanished into the trees, his pack following close behind. --- A Divided Pack Back at the clearing, the tension was palpable. The pack gathered in a tight circle, their expressions a mixture of anger and fear. Magnus was the first to speak. “We can’t wait for them to attack,” he said, his voice sharp. “We need to take the fight to them.” “And risk walking into a trap?” Dante countered. “That’s exactly what they want.” “So what’s the plan?” another wolf asked, his voice tinged with frustration. “Sit around and wait for them to pick us off one by one?” Lila felt the weight of their gazes turn to her. She stepped forward, her heart pounding but her resolve firm. “This isn’t just your fight,” she said. “It’s mine too. The Shadow Alpha wants me, not you. Maybe I can—” “No,” Dante said firmly, cutting her off. “You’re not going to sacrifice yourself.” “I wasn’t suggesting that,” Lila said, meeting his gaze. “But maybe we can use what he wants against him. If I’m the bait, we can draw him out.” The pack erupted into a chorus of protests, but Lila held her ground. “You’re already at risk because of me,” she said, her voice rising above the chaos. “Let me do something to help.” “She has a point,” Magnus said grudgingly, his expression serious. “If we play this right, we could end this before it starts.” Dante’s jaw tightened, his golden eyes locked on Lila. “It’s too dangerous.” “And waiting isn’t?” she shot back. “We have to do something, Dante.” The alpha let out a frustrated growl but finally nodded. “Fine,” he said. “But we do this my way. No risks we can’t control.” --- The Plan By the time the moon was high in the sky, the plan was set. Lila would accompany Dante and a small group of the pack to a neutral location near the border. They would stage an encounter, luring the Shadow Alpha’s forces into the open. The rest of the pack would lie in wait, ready to strike if things went south. As the group prepared to leave, Lila felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Magnus, his expression unusually solemn. “Are you sure about this?” he asked. “No,” she admitted. “But I don’t see another choice.” Magnus nodded, his grip tightening briefly. “You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that. Just don’t get yourself killed. Dante would never let me hear the end of it.” Lila managed a small smile. “I’ll do my best.” --- The Encounter The clearing they chose was eerily quiet, the trees casting long shadows under the moonlight. Lila stood in the center, her heart racing as she waited for the rogues to appear. Dante and the others were hidden in the surrounding forest, their presence a comforting but invisible shield. Minutes stretched into what felt like hours before the first rogue appeared. Then another. And another. Soon, the clearing was filled with them, their glowing red eyes fixed on Lila. The rogue leader stepped forward, his grin predatory. “Brave of you to show up,” he said. “But foolish.” Lila lifted her chin, forcing herself to stand tall. “I’m here to talk,” she said. “If your Shadow Alpha wants me, he can come himself.” The rogue laughed. “Oh, he’s closer than you think.” Before she could react, the shadows around the clearing seemed to come alive, coalescing into a figure that sent a chill down Lila’s spine. He was tall and imposing, his presence suffocating. His eyes burned with a dark, unnatural light. “Lila,” the Shadow Alpha said, his voice a silken threat. “We finally meet.” Lila’s blood turned to ice. “You won’t win,” she said, her voice shaking but defiant. The Shadow Alpha smiled, a cold, cruel expression. “Oh, my dear. I already have.” Before she could move, the shadows surged forward, and chaos erupted.
