Episode 15

Echoes of the Past The night was quiet, but the silence felt heavy, as if the forest itself was holding its breath. Lila sat on a flat rock at the edge of the pack’s territory, staring into the dark expanse of trees. Despite Dante’s reassurances, the rogue’s words haunted her. You don’t even know what she is, do you? Her thoughts churned, a storm of doubt and fear swirling within her. Ever since she had bonded with the pack, she had felt different, stronger—but she didn’t know why. The sound of footsteps drew her attention, and she turned to see Dante approaching. His presence was like a balm to her frayed nerves, but tonight even he couldn’t ease the tension inside her. “You should be resting,” he said, his golden eyes searching hers. “I can’t,” Lila admitted. “Not when I don’t even know what’s happening to me.” Dante sighed and sat beside her, his broad shoulders brushing against hers. “I know this is hard, Lila. But we’ll find the answers. I promise.” “How?” she asked, her voice tinged with frustration. “The rogues won’t talk, and the Shadow Alpha is still out there. What if he knows more about me than I do?” Dante hesitated, and Lila’s heart sank. His silence told her everything she needed to know. “There might be another way,” he said finally, his tone cautious. Lila turned to him, hope flickering in her chest. “What is it?” “There’s someone who might have answers. An elder who’s been around longer than any of us. But...” He trailed off, his jaw tightening. “But what?” Lila pressed. “She’s not exactly... welcoming,” Dante admitted. “And she doesn’t trust outsiders. If we go to her, we’ll be taking a risk.” Lila’s determination hardened. “I’ll take that risk. I need to know who I am, Dante. What I am.” --- The Elder’s Lair The journey to the elder’s dwelling took them deep into the forest, farther than Lila had ever ventured. The trees grew thicker, their gnarled branches weaving a canopy that blocked out the moonlight. The air was cooler here, carrying a faint, metallic scent that made Lila’s skin prickle. “Are you sure she’ll help us?” Lila asked, glancing at Dante. “She’ll help,” Dante said, though he didn’t sound entirely convinced. “If she thinks it’s worth her time.” They reached a small clearing where a weathered cabin sat nestled among the trees. Smoke curled from the chimney, and the faint glow of firelight seeped through the cracks in the shutters. Dante knocked on the door, the sound echoing in the stillness. A moment later, the door creaked open, revealing a woman who seemed as ancient as the forest itself. Her hair was silver and wild, her eyes sharp and piercing. She wore a cloak of dark, patchwork fabric, and her presence radiated an aura of otherworldly power. “Dante,” she said, her voice raspy but strong. “It’s been a long time.” “It has,” Dante replied, inclining his head respectfully. “We need your help, Elder Iona.” Iona’s gaze shifted to Lila, and the weight of her stare made Lila’s breath catch. “This is her,” Iona said, her tone unreadable. “The one the Shadow Alpha seeks.” “Yes,” Dante confirmed. “We don’t know why. But we think you might.” Iona stepped aside, motioning for them to enter. The interior of the cabin was cluttered with jars of herbs, bones, and trinkets, all illuminated by the flickering firelight. Lila sat on a worn chair while Iona circled her, studying her with an intensity that made her skin crawl. “You’re not fully human,” Iona said finally, her voice low. “I’ve heard that before,” Lila said, trying to keep her voice steady. “But no one can tell me what I am.” Iona’s lips curled into a faint smile. “That’s because they don’t know. But I do.” She reached for a small knife and held it out to Lila. “Your blood holds the key. Let me see it.” Lila hesitated, her heart pounding. She glanced at Dante, who gave her a reassuring nod. Taking a deep breath, she pricked her finger with the blade, watching as a drop of blood welled up. Iona took Lila’s hand, holding it over a bowl filled with dark liquid. The blood fell, rippling across the surface, and the liquid began to glow faintly. Iona’s eyes widened, and she muttered something under her breath—a language Lila didn’t recognize. “What is it?” Lila asked, her voice trembling. “You’re not just bonded to the pack,” Iona said, her tone reverent. “You’re part of it. Your blood carries their essence—their power. But it’s not natural. Someone... or something... made you this way.” Lila’s stomach churned. “Made me? How?” “That, I cannot say,” Iona admitted. “But I can tell you this: the Shadow Alpha seeks you because he believes you’re the key to something greater. A power that could reshape our world.” “What kind of power?” Dante asked, his voice sharp. “The power to bind and command,” Iona said, her gaze locking onto Lila’s. “Not just one pack, but all of them. If the Shadow Alpha gains control of her, he could unite the rogues and overthrow every pack in existence.” The room fell silent, the weight of Iona’s words settling over them like a heavy fog. “So I’m... some kind of weapon?” Lila whispered, her voice barely audible. “No,” Iona said firmly. “You’re more than that. You’re a leader. A bridge between worlds. But you must decide who you’ll become—before he decides for you.” --- A New Resolve As they left the elder’s cabin, Lila’s mind raced. Her entire life had been turned upside down, and now she was faced with an even greater burden. Dante walked beside her, his presence grounding her. “We’ll figure this out,” he said softly. Lila stopped and turned to him, her eyes blazing with determination. “No, Dante. I’ll figure this out. I won’t let the Shadow Alpha—or anyone else—decide my fate. This is my fight now.” Dante’s expression softened, a hint of pride flickering in his golden eyes. “Then you won’t fight it alone.” Lila nodded, her resolve hardening. Whatever the Shadow Alpha wanted, she would make sure he never got it. She would uncover the truth of her past, master the power within her, and protect the pack that had become her family. No matter the cost.
