Chapter 19

The Mark of the Wild The first light of dawn filtered through the trees, casting long shadows across the clearing as the pack gathered in the training grounds. The area was a wide, open space surrounded by towering pines, the scent of earth and dew heavy in the air. The wolves stood in both forms, their attention focused on Dante, who stood at the center with Lila by his side. “This isn’t just about strength,” Dante began, his voice carrying authority. “It’s about control. Power without focus is a liability. Lila needs both if she’s to survive—and so do we.” Lila swallowed hard as dozens of eyes turned to her, some curious, others skeptical. She felt exposed, standing in the middle of the group, but she squared her shoulders. She had no choice but to rise to the challenge. “Today, we start with the basics,” Dante said, stepping back to give her space. “Magnus will spar with you.” Her stomach dropped. Magnus? Of all the wolves, he was the last one she wanted to face. Magnus shifted into his human form, his tall, muscular frame radiating confidence. His smirk returned as he approached. “You sure she’s ready for this, Alpha? I’d hate to break her on the first day.” Dante’s gaze hardened. “Don’t underestimate her.” Magnus chuckled, cracking his knuckles. “Fine. Let’s see what she’s got.” Lila’s heart pounded as Magnus stepped into the ring. She clenched her fists, trying to steady her breathing. “Remember what I said last night,” Dante murmured, his golden eyes meeting hers. “Trust your instincts.” Magnus lunged without warning, his movements fast and fluid. Lila barely had time to react as he aimed a strike at her side. She ducked, rolling out of the way, but he was on her again in an instant, forcing her to stay on the defensive. “Come on, Lila,” Magnus taunted. “Show me you’re not just a liability.” His words stung, but they also sparked something inside her. A heat began to build in her chest, a wild, untamed energy that begged to be released. Magnus came at her again, his strikes faster and more calculated. This time, Lila didn’t back away. She stepped into his attack, catching his wrist and twisting it. The move surprised him, and she used the moment to shove him back. The pack murmured in surprise as Magnus stumbled but quickly regained his footing. His smirk was gone, replaced by a look of grudging respect. “Not bad,” he admitted, circling her. “But you’ll have to do better than that.” He shifted into his wolf form, his massive black fur bristling as he growled low in his throat. Lila froze, her instincts screaming at her to run, but she forced herself to stand her ground. Magnus lunged again, and this time, the energy inside her erupted. She felt a surge of power flood her veins as her vision sharpened, the world slowing around her. She sidestepped his attack with ease, her movements almost effortless. Before she knew what she was doing, she let out a growl—a sound so deep and primal it startled even her. Magnus stopped mid-lunge, his head tilting as he stared at her. The pack fell silent, their eyes wide with shock. “What... was that?” Magnus asked, shifting back into his human form. His expression was a mix of confusion and wariness. Dante stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Lila. “That was her instinct awakening,” he said, his voice calm but filled with a quiet intensity. Lila looked down at her hands, which were trembling with energy. She felt alive in a way she never had before, but it was also terrifying. “What’s happening to me?” she whispered. Dante placed a hand on her shoulder. “You’re unlocking your true potential. It’s the mark of someone who’s not just a member of the pack but a leader.” “A leader?” Lila repeated, her voice shaky. Magnus scoffed. “You mean to tell me she’s...?” “Yes,” Dante said firmly, cutting him off. “She’s not just a half-bound. She’s something more—something the Shadowborn fear. And that’s why we need her to be ready.” The pack murmured among themselves, their expressions a mix of awe and uncertainty. Lila took a step back, her mind racing. She hadn’t asked for any of this, yet here she was, being told she was more than she ever thought possible. It was overwhelming, but as she looked at Dante, she saw the faith in his eyes. He believed in her, even if she didn’t believe in herself yet. “Alright,” she said, her voice steady despite the chaos inside her. “Let’s keep going.” Dante smiled, pride flashing in his golden eyes. “That’s the spirit.” The training continued, with Dante guiding her through exercises designed to hone her instincts and control her newfound power. By the time the sun was high in the sky, Lila was exhausted but also exhilarated. As the pack began to disperse, Dante pulled her aside. “You did well today,” he said. “But this is only the beginning. The Shadowborn won’t wait for you to be ready. We need to stay ahead of them.” Lila nodded, determination hardening in her chest. “I’ll do whatever it takes.” Dante’s gaze softened, and he reached out to brush a strand of hair from her face. “I know you will. You’re stronger than you realize, Lila. And we’ll face whatever comes—together.” As they stood in the fading light, the weight of their bond settled over them. The road ahead was uncertain and filled with danger, but for the first time, Lila felt like she might be able to face it. With Dante by her side, she was ready to embrace her destiny.
