Chapter 4: You’ve Done Enough
***
The following days after the wedding were like any other, I was stuck in my room unwilling to go outside, I didn’t even the mind I had nothing to eat… I felt like I couldn’t even stomach anything if I did try…
Riing… Suddenly my phone rings and it’s Kris on the other end of the line. It hit me like a ton of bricks to hear his voice again after so long.
“Ba-babysit? Charlie?” I asked in shock, that kid seemed to be fine on his own, why would he need a babysitter?
“Please, I don’t have anyone else to turn to, just for a few hours… I’m really in a pinch…” Kris’s begging voice made me feel back. So of course I agreed and headed to his address soon after…
It couldn’t be that difficult to take care of a kid, right?
“You look ugly.” Charlie told me upon his father’s leaving.
“You really have no manners, kid…” Though I couldn’t really argue with him either, I came straight up because I didn’t want to waste time getting ready. My hair was still messy, my eyes puffy from crying and I probably could have showered at least but didn’t… The oversized hoodie I wore with it’s hood on, only served to further the homeless image I seemed to portray.
“Use this.” Charlie suddenly handed me a bag with what seemed to be skincare and make up.
“Whose is this? Your moms?” I asked looking baffled.
“She doesn’t use it anymore.” Charlie simply replied and sat down in front of the TV. He played a show that seemed a bit too difficult for a child his age to understand. It was about a lawyer and criminal investigator duo that solve crimes. It didn’t seem appropriate and yet who am I to tell him any different?
“Um… do you want to play a game together… or something?” I asked while sitting next to him on the sofa.
“First fix your appearance.” Charlie’s response caught me off guard.
“You… are only pretending not to speak well in front of your dad, right?” I finally asked him.
“He doesn’t pay attention to me if I don’t…” Charlie seemed like such a smart child, smart beyond his years. For his small frame he managed to understand fundamentally what he needed to do to keep his father concerned.
“I mean…–!” As I tried to speak there was a knock at the door. Maybe it was Kris coming back because he forgot something.
Charlie didn’t see, to pay me any mind as I headed to open it. On the other side was a beautifully dressed woman. She had short blond curly hair, a pair of mesmerizing blue eyes and a long flowy navy blue dress that complimented her rather pale complexion.
“Oh, you’re the new babysitter I assume? I’ll pay your fee, how much is it? I’m taking over from here.” She suddenly brought out her wallet from her expensive looking bag and stepped inside as if she owned the place.
“Taking over? What do you mean?” I questioned, after all Kris called me because there was no one else he could turn to, so why was it that there was someone here now?
“I’m his mother, it’s only reasonable I’d come take care of him instead of some random woman off the street. Now go pack your things, I’ll take Charles out to the park.” The woman had a certain air to her… although she was gorgeous I felt uneasy around her. Why did she call him Charles and not Charlie?
Suddenly I felt a tug at my pants again. Charlie had gotten behind me and hid quietly as if to tell me something is wrong.
“Oh, you’re always acting so shy, come on, we have to leave now. Before your father gets back and tries to take you away from me again.” Suddenly as if the mask the woman had worn had broken, a deranged expression showed on her face.
“You’re not taking him anywhere.” I said while holding onto Charlie, at that moment, seeing the bit of fear in his eyes, I remembered no child matured so fast without a reason. By the time my gaze landed onto the woman that had walked into the apartment, I felt a drop of cold sweat running down my back…
“You are not his mother, I am. And a w***e off the street won’t tell me what to do with my child!” Suddenly she got angry, she yelled at me and tried to grab my hair.
“Back off, lady. I don’t want to fight you…” I warned her but she continued lunging herself at me like a wild beast.
“Charlie, call the police.” I told the kid who seemed to know how to do that all too well.
His mother grabbed my wrist and twisted it. “You think you can just waltz in here and take my family away from me, I don’t care if you sleep with my husband but you will never have him. He’s mine.”
“I don’t want your husband-!” I tried to yell back but suddenly Charlie chimed in instead. “Mommy is being attacked by a random blond lady! She’s yelling at her and hurting her!”
What in the world have I gotten myself into!? Why is Charlie constantly referring to me as his mom?!
“Oh, so that’s it… now he’s calling you mom… I guess it’s that easy to break up a family… And that asshole said it was because of the drugs… and not because he’s sleeping with a nobody like you!” The more she yelled, the more irritated she seemed to become. I had put myself in a middle of a conflict I had no part off…
However… There is a child here with us… if it were just me I would have ran off a long time ago but somehow that little s**t calling me his mom almost seems endearing now with that sad expression of his.
“That’s it!” I grabbed onto the woman’s arm and flung her over my shoulder. I had learned a good amount of jui jitsu while in high school, glad I could finally put it to good use now.
The police officer arrived surprisingly fast but my eyes widened when I saw it was Dimitri… I knew he worked for the local police department but what kind of coincidence did it have to be for him to be here now of all times?!
“I see now…” Dimitri walked inside and as if on command the woman on the floor began crying.
“This woman entered my apartment and began hitting me. Thank Goodness you’re here officer!” She beamed seeing him.
“I will take care of her ma’am…” Dimitri suddenly held my hands together and arrested me. “You are being detained for trespassing.”
“Wait Dimitri, it’s me, are you insane? I’m here to babysit and this woman isn’t supposed to be here!” I yelled back trying to explain everything.
“This is her address…” Dimitri confirmed.
“But the kid, he’s obviously scared!” I said while turning to Charlie who was my last hope but he couldn’t even open his mouth as his mother grabbed him and shut his lips.
“He’s the one that called you officer, as you hear, his MOTHER was being harassed by a random woman.” She spoke strongly emphasising her being his blood.
Charlie struggled in her grasp. “Help!” He called out. But Dimitri completely ignored the kid and took me away, being arrested by my best friend, first crush… all while babysitting a kid I don’t even know… What a life…
