Ethereal Magazine

Maeve’s POV One thing I had always dreamed of was working in a place that exuded high standards. A place where, the moment I walked in, everyone rushed to ask what I needed and what they had accomplished in my absence. A place where I could confidently shout, “Bring me my coffee!” and watch as everyone sprang into action. A place where the sound of my heels clicking on the floor sent everyone into a flurry of productivity. Ethereal magazine was truly the perfect fit for me to embrace my inner boss. I was getting married to Axel soon, which meant I’d be a Bernard! And I had every right to be a boss at his magazine company. I’d already bought my black pant trousers to go with my black suit jacket and red heels. I had already envisioned the outfit, and there I was, sitting alone in the vast living room, gazing at the dress and shoes. I couldn't help but contemplate whether I should surprise my fiancé at his company. Thinking about it made me nauseous, but I hadn’t even discussed it with him yet! I was left wondering how he’d react if I showed up unexpectedly at his workplace. After some serious soul-searching, I finally sprang up from the couch, grabbed my fabulous new clothes, and whispered to myself, "Opportunity comes but once." I slipped into the bathroom for a nice shower, and when I emerged, I stood in front of the mirror, brushing my luscious brown hair while admiring my large, expressive dark doe eyes. "Today is going to be amazing!" I declared with a smile. I slipped into the suit, feeling like a million bucks, and walked out of our mansion. I called one of Axel’s drivers and asked him to take me to Ethereal Magazine in the red Tesla — that car screamed boss energy. As I settled into the plush seats, I couldn’t help but think, “I’m about to be the boss of someone soon.” The wind blew through my brown hair, and a broad smile spread across my face as we drove through the streets of Sundale. The city was always buzzing with life, a town where billionaires mingled and renowned businesses thrived. Every corner had its own story to tell. However, one thing about Sundale was that everyone mostly kept to their own business. People were often in their own worlds, focused on their goals and ambitions. It was a place where you really needed your own group of friends to feel connected. Without that click, it was easy to feel lost in the busy streets. I came from the rural side of Sundale, where life was a bit slower and simpler. In the rural areas, there was a sense of community and warmth that felt different from the fast-paced city life. Sometimes, when I lay in my bed, tucked in, I reminisce about all my good childhood memories, playing in the mud even when I was starving. The tires screeched against the pavement with a scratchy noise as the driver came to a halt in front of the magazine company. It wasn’t my first encounter with Ethereal Magazine; I’d been admiring it since I was younger, usually on those walks with my mum. Every time I caught a glimpse of the building and that massive sign proclaiming “Ethereal Magazine: The Home of Ethereal Beauty,” It was a world I longed to be part of. I’d always dreamed of being on its cover one day. And here I am, getting ready to marry the C.E.O. of Ethereal Magazine—proof that dreams really do come true! In my mind, I was totally expecting the driver to hop out and open the door for me, but nope! He just sat there, waiting for me to do it myself. Frustrated, I yelled, “Get down from the car and open the door for me!” “Yes ma’am!” He leaped out of the driver’s seat at the sound of my voice and rushed to open the door for me. As I stepped down, I paused to admire the stunning structure and the vibrant flowers surrounding the building. “Is there a problem, ma’am?” he asked, trembling. “Get out of my face!” I snapped at him, shooting him a dirty look. He immediately rushed back into the car and drove off. At the entrance, there were two really handsome guys in sleek black suits, both with curly jet-black hair. I tucked my hair behind my ears, feeling a bit flustered as I got closer. “Wait, what’s wrong with me? I’m about to marry Axel. I shouldn’t be checking out other guys!” my inner voice scolded. As I walked up to the door, one of the men asked, “Hello, may I see your card?” “What do you mean?” I shot back, my brow arching in disbelief. “Don’t you work here? Each employee has a card, so we check them before entry,” he replied, looking unfazed. “What sort of disrespect is this!” I exclaimed? The other man said, “We aren’t trying to argue with you. We just want to see your card.” “I’m Axel’s fiancé!” I declared, and instantly, their attitude towards me changed. They apologized profusely, telling me not to mention this to Axel. I forgave them, and they allowed me to pass. My eyes lit up as I stepped into the building; it was unlike anything I’d ever seen! As I went further inside, I noticed everyone was so focused on their work. There were various sections—one for taking stunning photographs, another for editing the magazine, and so many more intriguing spaces waiting to be explored. The moment I saw Helen, the woman I clashed with at my party, my anger flared up again. She was in the photography section, getting prepared for the next shoot. Without thinking, I stormed into the room and shouted, “You b***h!” Some people recognized me as Axel’s fiancé, while others just stared in shock, unsure of what was happening. I flew towards her, and there she was, posing like she was the star of the show. The spotlight hit her just right, and it only made me even angrier. I threw the first punch, and she shot back, yelling at me, “You are really from the streets!” I grabbed her brunette hair and sent her crashing to the ground. People around us tried to break it up, but neither of us was ready to back down. “What’s going on here?” Axel barged in, his voice sent shock waves to everyone in the room, including the windows. He had that same dominant vibe at work as he did in bed with me. I quickly pulled away from Helen, but before I knew it, she was pointing fingers, blaming me for everything. I tried to defend myself, but the whole room was on her side. As I felt my concealer sliding down my face, it hit me… I had just made a total fool of myself.
