Maeve’s POV
“It’s been two days since Axel left home.” I sat at the edge of our bed in my nightgown, the morning sun illuminating my skin, my hands on my chin as I looked out through the window.
I could hear the birds chirping in the trees and the leaves rustling as the wind blew through them. "I should be beside my fiancé, enjoying the calmness the morning brings, feeling Axel’s warm touch, telling him how many children I want, and how we’ll raise them together. I need his warm lips pressing against my neck,” I thought to myself.
Instead, Axel was at Jonah’s house, probably making up lies about what a terrible wife I would be if he married me. I hoped Jenny wasn’t home with Jonah as I spoke, because she would use me as a laughingstock, and any chance she got, she’d make up stories to the ladies in Sundale about how I can’t keep a man. — F**k that little b***h!'
All these thoughts wouldn’t cloud my mind if Axel didn’t keep treating me like a toy. My back fell against the sheets as I gazed up at the ceiling of our vast bedroom. The chandelier, made only of diamonds and gemstones, dangled gracefully in the air; each layer was crafted with precision and care.
My eyes remained fixed on it as I wondered who I could call to make me feel less sad.
I swiped through the list of people in my life like I was scrolling through cheap products on i********:. “None of them might answer if I reached out; they were just friends for the good times,” I whimpered.
There was no other choice left. I had to call the one person closest to me—the only one I believed wouldn’t tell anybody what I was about to say.
I leaned over to pick up my phone, slightly disturbing the already neatly laid sheets. As I searched for my mum’s number, my heart pounded like a running engine. I could hear the loud thumping in my ear. I could have just searched for her name, but as I scrolled, I tried to calm my nerves so I wouldn’t explode during the call.
After scrolling slowly and questioning my decision to call, I finally stumbled upon my mum’s number. My thumb hovered a few inches above the screen, trembling, while my other fingers weakened, struggling to hold the phone's weight.
When my thumb finally touched the phone screen, I immediately placed the phone in my ear. The periodic beeps sent fear flowing through my veins; my eyes protruded from their sockets and felt heavy.
“Maeve, why are you calling so early? Isn’t Axel’s c**k supposed to be all up in your mouth as we speak?” Her voice pierced through my eardrum.
My heart dropped. Lips quivering, I lost my voice. Why is she so cranky this morning? She was never patient enough to listen to her own child. Everything she cared about was money, money, money. Those were the words that played in my mind, but I dared not speak them; otherwise, my mum would report me to Axel, and Axel hated when I had been a bad girl.
“Uhm…” memories of what Axel had done to me began replaying in my head. My lips quivered rapidly; the words were finding it hard to come out of my lips even though I had prepared what to say to my mum. Tears brimmed in my eyes, rolling down my face as I gripped the phone, my breath gulping in ragged gasps.
“You bastard child! Hope you haven’t caused any trouble with that kind man?” My mum's voice began to rise. My brow arched as tears lingered in my eyes.
How could my mum be so thoughtless? I knew she and my dad always wanted me to marry a wealthy man, but I never thought she wouldn’t even give a damn about my well-being.
“I’m warning you, girl, don’t do anything stupid.” My mum's voice rang through my ears instantly without me explaining anything to her—What a life!. The phone lay silent as I threw it on my bed, screaming at the top of my lungs as I continued to sob. Nobody could hear me; I was the only one home. I curled up on my left side, clutching the spare pillow tightly as tears streamed down my face, soaking the pillow beneath my head. I could feel my phone buzzing. However, the pain my Mother caused me weakened my bones. It was so hard for me to stretch and pick up the phone.
I lay there, watching the phone ring. After a while, I regained a little strength and stretched my arms to pick it up. My grip was weak, my fingers trembling as my mum’s harsh words lingered in my mind.
As I gazed at the screen, my dad began calling. My mum must have told him everything I said. Part of me believed he had nothing good to say, but he was still my dad, so I had to answer.
The phone felt dense in my arms, my heart pounded rapidly, and my eyes brimmed with tears as I placed it against my left ear.
“Daughter.” I let out a light gasp as his baritone voice suddenly hit. I wanted to speak, but I couldn’t; my rosy lips trembled instead.
“You have an opportunity that Mum and I never had. Don’t waste it.” Well, on the bright side, he didn’t yell at me as my mum did, but he still didn’t care about how I felt. It’s all about Axel’s wealth.
“No one cares for me anymore. I’m all alone. Fine! My family will never go broke; I’ll never have to go to sleep hungry anymore; I’ll never have to worry about people chasing my parents and threatening to kill them because of the debt they owe. I’ll never be called the poor girl anymore. However, I also crave love; I want to be touched and cared for softly. I don’t think I can have what I crave; they are all just my unattainable thoughts."
