Helen’s POV
Suddenly, I heard a soft knock on the door. That knock made my heart jump, and I knew it had to be Axel. “What does he want? Maybe he wants to talk business… I hope,” I whispered to myself.
“Helen, I just want to talk!” he called out, still knocking. I got up from the floor, took a deep breath, and faced the door. As I put my hand on the doorknob, I paused. A small voice in my head wondered, “What if he tries to kiss me?” That can’t be—he’s my boss, and he has a fiancée.
The door creaked open. Axel leaned against the frame, his gaze meeting mine as he looked over my face. I stood there, trying to guess what he was thinking, but Axel was hard to read. I wanted to say something, but it felt like my lips were stuck.
“I just wanted to ask if you’re okay; you seemed troubled when you saw me at the main entrance,” he said, his words sounding distant in my ears. I was lost in… his hot face. No—my thoughts. “Hello… hey!” he called, snapping his fingers in front of me and bringing me back to reality.
“Um… I’ve been stressed lately; I guess that’s why,” I said, blinking quickly and stuttering. I couldn’t find the right words. This awkward moment between my boss and me left me confused.
Axel took deep breaths. His face fell. My heart pounded harder every second I anticipated his response.
“I’ve been diagnosed with a mental condition; doctors say they haven’t seen this type of condition before. They don’t even have a name for it. I do things that I’m not aware of… It’s like being possessed.” He dragged his words, his eyes looking down to the floor
"I’m sorry to hear that…” I whispered. Hearing Axel’s story made me feel something for him, but I also felt a nudge that there might be lies in what he said.
Then, he raised his head back up, and his eyes played on my boobs as a smirk formed on his lips. “I just want to let you know that you can trust me. If anything is bothering you, just come to me, and I will make all your worries go away.” His voice was calmer than ever
“Is my cloth revealing?” That thought crept in, and I swiftly bent my neck ot look at if there was any revealing part of my boobs. I had worn a navy blue suit skirt that reached my knee, and my inner shirt had properly covered my bust. To top it all off, I had a blazer on, so what the heck had he been staring at?
The silent glare became really uncomfortable. I prayed he would turn his back and leave, but he didn’t. He stood there; his eyes traced every inch of my body. “Do you have something else to say? I have things to do, boss,” I whimpered.
“Need I remind you I am the boss here and I own this building, so I can be at any place at any time?” he whispered with a grin, his hands crossed in front of his groin.
“Yes, but need I remind you that I can also leave your damn company if you disrespect me? All magazine companies in this city want me, Axel, so watch it!” I snarled. For a second there, it felt like I had regained my confidence.
“That’s what I like about you, Meave; you aren’t susceptible to intimidation. That is a beautiful thing to have as a woman,” he smiled.
“Anyway, I have some big news for you, Helen,” he announced.
“Lay it on me, boss…” I asked, my eyes brightened. The statement he made eased the weird tension I was feeling a bit. A small smile flickered at the corner of his mouth.
“I’m allowing you to be among my top editors for the magazine company. I believe we need minds like yours when putting ideas together.” Axel's words dropped like a stone, and his eyes locked onto mine with a fierce gaze, as if daring me to flinch.
“What! A promotion! That’s amazing news,” I yelled. All my dreams in life are finally coming true, and Axel is playing a big role in making them come true. His eyes sparkled as he watched me rejoice, a small smile playing on his lips.
I crushed myself against him, arms locked around his waist. He hugged me back, holding me close, but his hands began a slow descent. I could feel his fingers wandering below my waistline, tracing the curves of my hips. Before his hands reached my butt, I swiftly pulled back, my smile bright and cheerful, a distraction from the awkward moment. I couldn’t lose an opportunity that would take me to a higher level in one of the biggest Magazine companies in Sundale because of Axel’s Wandering fingers.
“You deserve it, you deserve all that is coming your way.” He said, his tone encouraging and warm
“Thanks, Axel. Don’t work too hard,” I said with a grin, still buzzing from the promotion news. As I turned to my desk, Axel’s strong hands slapped, and his fingers dug into my ass. Ahh…” I yelled, followed by a light gasp.
“What the hell?!” My neck snapped back, my brow furrowed, and my fist clenched. But all I saw was my door, wide open and swinging back and forth. Axel had vanished into thin air. I felt assaulted, used, and, most of all, helpless. Why would Axel, a man I always admired, do something so misogynistic?
As I glared at the open door, my fingers went to my neck, softly brushing and pressing against my skin. My eyelids squeezed shut, and ragged, uneven breaths escaped my lips. I knew that man was up to no good when he told that made-up story about having a mental condition. I was trying to erase that thought, trying to stop that moment from replaying in my mind. It was sudden and unexpected. Maybe Axel wasn’t who I thought he was.
