The White Pills
Elaina's POV
All this while I considered myself weaker than an average omega, because of how often I got sick, but that was all a lie.
I was getting poisoned by my own sister. She started bringing me those supplements a month after my health started failing more often. And I was stupid to have never doubted her.
Zuri rose in my chest. Not clawing this time. Not screaming. We were too tired for that.
Now do you see? she said.
I sat on the edge of the clinic bed, holding my head in both hands.
You lost the baby. The words kept circling, faster and faster, until I felt like my mind was going to tear loose from my skull. Maren said something about rest. Kyle said something about waiting until I was stronger, but I couldn't.
I stood up.
My legs were shivering. My whole body was shivering. I wrapped my fingers around the little brown bottle until the plastic creaked, and I walked out of the clinic, through the cold, straight to the pack house.
Maids scattered out of my path. Maybe it was my face. Maybe it was the hospital gown and the bare feet and the blood still crusted under my nose. I didn't care. I walked up the stairs I had walked ten thousand times, down the corridor to the room that used to be mine, and I threw the door open.
They were tangled on the bed… my bed… her head on his bare chest, with a breakfast tray between them.
I hurled the bottle at her.
It hit her on the shoulder and pills scattered across the sheets like hail. Daniel moved faster than I'd ever seen him move… rolling, shielding her body with his.
"Have you lost your mind?!" he roared. "Do you know she is pregnant with my pup?!"
"I was also pregnant!" The scream ripped out of somewhere I didn't know I had. "I was pregnant, Daniel, and I lost it… but how would you know? How would you know anything, when you're this busy with her?"
He went still. He frowned at me. "What do you mean?"
"She has been feeding me wolfsbane." My finger shook as I pointed at my sister. "That's why I'm sick. That's why I've always been sick. That's why I lost my child. What the hell did I ever do to you?"
"Wolfs… bane?" Sharon's lips quivered. Her eyes went wide and wet, her hand fluttering to her chest.
Days ago, that trembling lip would have worked on me. It had worked on me my whole life. But something had burned away in that clinic bed, and now I could see through her acts like glass. I could see it as clear as day. The tears arrived exactly on cue. They always had.
I threw the report at him. The papers fluttered against his chest and dropped to the bed.
"Read it. The supplements she's been giving me are wolfsbane. It's in my blood. It's in my liver, Daniel, years of it. And I lost our child because of it."
His eyes moved across the page. For one heartbeat… he looked genuinely confused. Like he didn't know what to say.
He turned to Sharon. "Did you know about this?"
"Of course not!" She pressed into his side, small and shaking. "I really thought it was good medicine! I got it from the healers… they told me it was healthy, that it would help her! I would never… She's my sister." She looked up at him, with her lashes wet. "You believe me, don't you?"
"Of course I do." He said instantly. He hadn't even finished reading the report.
I stared at him. "What the hell do you mean, of course?"
"Stop being so angry, Eliana." He sighed, like I was a chore. Like I was a fly at his dinner. "She already apologized. It was a mistake. And besides…" He tossed the report aside. "It's your fault for not checking your own medicine properly."
The air went out of the room.
"Are you hearing yourself?" My hand pressed against my chest, against the pain building like a storm behind my ribs. "It was your child, Daniel. Your child."
He looked at me. And in his eyes there was nothing. Not grief. Not even anger. Irritated that I was still standing in his doorway.
"And so what?"
Somewhere deep inside me, something that had been holding on for three years finally let go.
I looked at him… and all I felt was disgust.
"I've had enough of this."
I blinked back the tears. I lifted my chin. And I said the words no omega had ever said to an Alpha of Silver Claw.
"I, Eliana, reject you, Daniel, as my fated mate. From now, for all eternity, to the end of time."
Pain shot up my spine like wild fire.
It bent me almost double… the bond fighting the severance, my weakened body screaming that this would kill me. Maybe it would. I gripped the doorframe, and I did not take it back.
Daniel's roar filled the room. He staggered off the bed, clutching his chest, his knees hitting the floor. The rejection tore at him too… and it would keep tearing, festering in both of us until we died, unless he answered it.
"You…" he snarled through his teeth, sweat breaking across his face. "You dare…"
I held on. Shaking, bleeding from my nose again, half-blind with pain. I held on.
He groaned through one more wave of it. Then, with hatred in his eyes, he spat it out.
"I, Daniel, Alpha of Silver Claw… accept your rejection."
It was like a rope cut mid-fall.
The pain vanished so suddenly I gasped. The bond… that golden thread I'd followed through hallways, that warmth I'd wrapped around myself on cold nights… was simply gone. Where it had lived, there was silence.
My wolf exhaled for the first time in three years.
"Kyle." My voice came out steadier than I had any right to. He was already in the corridor… he must have followed me from the clinic. "Pack my things. We're going."
I turned my back on both of them and walked out.
"Eliana." Daniel's voice hit the corridor behind me, low and lethal. He was on his feet in the doorway, still pale from the rejection, and there was no pain left in his face. , threat. "If you ever tell anyone your involvement in the project… I'll kill you."
Not stay. Not I'm sorry. Not one word for the child.
, The seed. In the end, the only thing of mine he wanted to keep was the thing he'd stolen.
"Goodbye, Alpha."
I walked out of the pack house with Kyle at my shoulder and everything I owned about to fit in two bags. The mountain wind hit my face, and the tears finally came, falling freely as I went… down the steps, past the maids pretending not to look, through the gates my seed had kept fed.
Tears fell, and fell, and I kept walking.
He didn't need to worry about me telling anyone.
One day, everyone would know.
