Chapter 2: The Contract of Shadows

Silas Vane finally stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the office. He walked slowly toward me, and I had to fight the urge to step back. The air around him felt heavy, charged with a power I didn’t understand.
"Your father owes three million dollars, Ava," he said, circling me like a predator. "He wagered money that wasn't his. In my world, people go to prison for that. Or worse."
My voice trembled. "I'll work. I'll take three jobs. I'll pay every cent back, I promise."
Silas laughed, a dark, dry sound. "With a waitress salary? It would take you three lifetimes. I don’t have that kind of patience." He stopped directly in front of me, so close I could smell the sharp scent of sandalwood and expensive whiskey. "But I do have a vacancy."
I looked up into his icy blue eyes. "A vacancy?"
"My personal assistant just resigned. She couldn't handle the pressure," he smirked, his gaze trailing down my face. "You will take her place. You will live in my estate, travel where I travel, and answer my calls at three in the morning. You belong to the Vane Corporation—and to me—for the next six months."
"And the debt?" I whispered.
"If you survive six months without quitting, the debt is wiped clean. If you leave for even one day... your father goes to the police."
It was a deal with the devil. But looking at the cold determination in his eyes, I knew it was the only choice I had. "I'll do it," I said, my voice finally steady.
Silas leaned in, his breath hot against my ear. "Pack your bags, Ava. Your new life starts at dawn. And don't bother bringing the locket you're wearing. I know exactly where it came from."
My heart stopped. I tucked the silver locket under my shirt, the one my mother gave me before she disappeared ten years ago. How did a billionaire like Silas Vane know about a piece of "junk" from the slums?
"Wait," I called out, but he was already turning back to his desk.
"See you at six, Ava," he said without looking up. "Don't be late."
