I watched Claudia whisper to my father, her smugness and satisfaction barely concealed, and I felt my spirits sink. Every time I felt as though I was getting one step closer to protecting myself and my family – like creating my contract with Jaxon – another obstacle would land in my way.
And Claudia was a particularly stubborn obstacle. When had I ever gotten my way against her? It was hard to even remember a time before she’d wound herself around my father like a snake, encouraging her own enrichment through him without a care. She was so different from my mother, who always guided us, my father, and our pack with humility and generosity.
