CHAPTER 10: WHAT GROWS SLOWLY

382 Words
Carina learned that some connections don’t announce themselves with sparks. They arrive quietly, like roots settling beneath the soil—unseen, patient, steady. That’s how it felt with Malik. Their walks became a rhythm. Not daily, not forced—just often enough to feel intentional. Some evenings they talked. Others, they walked in comfortable silence, letting the sounds of nature speak for them. One evening, the sky heavy with clouds, Malik slowed his pace. “Can I tell you something?” he asked. She nodded. “I used to think I had to earn rest,” he said. “Like peace was something you only deserved after proving yourself.” He smiled faintly. “Turns out, that belief cost me a lot.” Carina listened, heart open. “I stayed too long in places that drained me,” he continued. “Jobs, relationships… habits. I confused consistency with loyalty.” He glanced at her. “Walking away taught me more than staying ever did.” She felt the truth of his words settle in her chest. “I know that feeling,” she said softly. “Thinking endurance means love.” He nodded. “Exactly.” They reached the clearing where sunlight filtered through the trees. The air smelled like rain. “I don’t want to rush anything,” Malik said, carefully. “I like who you are when you’re not trying to be anything else.” Her throat tightened—not from emotion that overwhelmed, but from emotion that fit. “I like who I am around you,” she replied. They stood there for a moment, not touching, not needing to. The connection didn’t demand proof. It simply existed. Later that night, Carina wrote in her journal: Some things grow slowly so they can last. They don’t burn fast. They warm you. Her phone buzzed. Malik: I was thinking… would you like to have dinner sometime? Malik: Not a rush. Just… intentionally. She smiled. Carina: I’d like that. She placed the phone down and exhaled, feeling calm—not nervous, not eager to impress. Just ready. Because this time, she wasn’t stepping into something to be chosen. She was stepping into something she wanted. And whatever came next, she knew one thing for sure— She would arrive as herself.
