It's silent as Ezra and I make our way through the streets. There are still people milling about, but not many. I'm holding his hand, feeling safer with him near me. We're on the opposite side of town, and it will be a few more miles before we reach Karl's block. We're walking in an uncomfortable silence. I feel awkward after that kiss. I would feel more embarrassed if not for the way he keeps glancing at me as we walk. I know he feels something for me, despite how things have turned out. It might just be the life-or-death circumstances and the concern in his blue eyes, but I can't bring myself to regret any of it. The nights are starting to get cooler, and the breeze has a bite to it. I pause as the wind shifts, bringing a coppery scent with it. I squeeze Ezra's hand and he stops too.
