The door rattled when I slammed it shut, the sound reverberating through the silence like a gunshot.
But it wasn’t enough.
Nothing was enough to silence the fire tearing through my chest.
I paced the length of my office, fists clenched so tightly my knuckles burned. Every image of her replayed in my head like a curse—Sophie standing in front of Voss, Sophie’s wide eyes when I caught her, Sophie’s lips parted as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t.
And the kiss. God, the kiss.
It hadn’t been planned. It hadn’t been rational. It was fire and fury colliding, my mouth on hers like claiming a piece of heaven and hell in one breath. She tasted like defiance, like danger, like the one thing I had forbidden myself.
