Chapter 8 Words Unseen

1064 Words
The siblings returned home just before sunset, as their father had instructed. The path up to their grandfather’s house grew quieter with every step away from the heart of the village, as if the very sounds themselves lowered their voices in respect for something unseen. Stephanie didn’t speak much on the way back. Her steps were steady, yet her mind lingered on the library… and more specifically, on that book. After dinner, she quietly retreated to her room. Closing the door behind her, she placed the book on her bed. She had only borrowed it, as the library did not allow purchases, its rules unusually strict—as if some books were never meant to leave. She opened the cover slowly. The pages were filled with strange words, long sentences, unfamiliar symbols, and a language unlike anything she had ever read. She tried to interpret them, to find a pattern or meaning, but failed. She whispered to herself: "This isn’t a language… at least not one I know." Yet, she felt something drawing her in. It wasn’t just curiosity, but a strange sense of familiarity, as if the words recognized her… even though she didn’t understand them. Finally, she closed the book and placed it beside her bed. She lay down and closed her eyes, but her mind refused to calm. The sentences repeated in her head, twisting and intertwining until she could no longer tell if she was remembering them… or dreaming them. Somewhere between wakefulness and sleep, Stephanie fell into a strange dream. She found herself walking through a dense forest, the trees taller than they should be, mist curling around the ground like a living creature. She wasn’t afraid—but neither was she completely safe. The words from the book echoed around her, not heard with her ears, but felt in her chest. Then… she stopped. She sensed something close. She could see no face, hear no voice, yet her heart raced as if something had come nearer than it should. Suddenly, she awoke. Her breaths came fast, and her hand instinctively reached toward the side of the bed… where the book lay. She looked around. The room was exactly as it had been. No forest, no mist, no sounds. Outside, morning had begun. The next hours passed in a strangely ordinary rhythm. Breakfast, small conversations, light laughter. No one seemed to notice her tension—or at least, they gave no sign that they had. Stephanie did not yet know that her siblings had received a message the previous night. Ian had agreed. His parents had allowed him to come. And he would arrive today. The parents had known and silently agreed not to tell Stephanie yet. There was no need to unsettle her further. As evening approached, Stephanie sat by the window when she heard the sound of a car approaching the house. At first, she paid it little attention… then froze. That feeling. Something familiar, warm… and close. Outside, Ian had arrived. She did not yet realize that his arrival would not be merely a visit… but the beginning of a change that was never meant to happen so quickly. ٠٠ The sun had begun to set behind the mountains, casting a warm glow over the large grandfather’s house. Stephanie sat on the edge of the window, staring out at the forest, trying to calm herself after the strange dream that had haunted her the night before. She heard footsteps on the stairs, then the cautious opening of the door. Slowly, she lifted her head and saw Ian standing at the entrance. He smiled at her, yet there was a trace of hesitation, as if he knew she might not welcome his presence easily. He took a few careful steps toward her and spoke softly, "Stephanie… I’m here." She bit her lower lip, trying to appear calm, yet her heart was racing. To her, Ian was a childhood friend, someone she had known since she was little… she had never thought that his feelings could be deeper than that. He moved closer, attempting to place his hand on her shoulder to hug her, but Stephanie stepped back, avoiding any awkwardness or embarrassment. She didn’t speak, didn’t show any emotion… just a lingering silence, her heart pounding while she tried to control everything. Ian offered a faint, sad smile, as if he could read everything in her eyes. He said softly, "It’s okay… I just wanted to see you." Stephanie remained silent, staring at him, searching for words but finding none. She felt a slight fear of hurting his feelings, so she chose quiet. Ian took a slow breath and stepped back, keeping a respectful distance, yet not too far. He knew the time would come when he could be closer… but not yet. Behind her, her siblings watched from afar, smiling lightly. They knew it wouldn’t be easy… Stephanie wasn’t used to someone approaching her this way, someone whose heart had been connected to hers for years. Inside, Stephanie felt something strange: despite the fear, despite the hesitation, there was a sense of comfort, a feeling that his presence was safe, that this visit was not by chance. But the truth… Ian’s feelings were deeper than just friendship, and she was not yet ready to notice. .. Leo quietly led Ian into the living room, with Carly following softly behind. As they entered, Anderson and Mary greeted them with warm smiles, as if they had been expecting this moment for some time. "Ian… welcome!" Anderson said, surprising Stephanie at the same time—she hadn’t expected her parents to know he was coming. Mary added with a gentle smile, "We’re very happy you’re here with us, especially with Stephanie." Stephanie felt a flicker of embarrassment and surprise. How did they know? And why hadn’t they told her? She simply looked at them silently, while Ian offered a shy smile. After that, everyone sat down for dinner together. Plates were spread across the table, and conversations floated lightly, mixed with soft laughter. The atmosphere was warm, unlike any other day before… a sense of belonging and comfort, even though Stephanie wasn’t entirely at ease yet. By the end of dinner, everyone exchanged small, knowing glances, as if aware that this was just the beginning… and that what was coming would be very different from anything Stephanie had expected.
