Chapter Nine

3123 Words

Chapter Nine I wake up without the slightest idea where I am. Telling myself it can’t possibly be Iraq, Afghanistan, or somewhere equally dangerous, I relax a little, let my senses kick in and give me more information. Okay, I’m in an incredibly unusual location. A bed—which in itself is odd, as I haven’t slept in a proper bed for longer than I care to remember. Sitting up slowly, I wince. Everything b****y hurts. I feel like I’ve been run over. Repeatedly. Resting back on the pillows, I take deep breaths, try to force some oxygen to my brain, chivvy it along to catch up. The last thing I remember is bedding down at Newhaven, feeling utterly shitty. It had been an unpleasant day from beginning to end. First one of the farmhands I was dealing with was coughing, spluttering, and sneezing.
