The morning started like any other—with me walking Dawn to school. She strolled beside me, while Amanda trailed a few feet behind us. I could feel Amanda’s glare drilling into the back of Dawn’s head, as though sheer spite could tear her apart. A few times, Dawn glanced back at her, shooting glares of her own. The tension between them had become a silent war. One that simmered just beneath the surface. It grew hotter every day, and though Amanda’s attitude infuriated me, I couldn’t help but admire Dawn’s strength. She had grown stronger and more confident. Leaning closer to her, I whispered, “Ignore her. She’s just jealous.” “Of what?” Dawn asked. Turning those beautiful green eyes on me. There was a flicker of something in them. Hope maybe?
