Chapter 14: The Man Who Kept His Promise

463 Words
The heavy oak doors swung open. A tall man stepped into the study. Rainwater dripped from the hem of his black overcoat, leaving faint marks across the polished marble floor. Silver streaked his dark hair, and a thin scar ran from his temple to the edge of his jaw. Though age had touched him, it had done little to diminish the discipline in his posture. His sharp eyes swept across the room. They settled on Luca. Neither man spoke. The silence stretched. Then Luca slowly pushed himself to his feet, ignoring the protest from his injured shoulder. For the first time since Sofia had met him... He looked genuinely shaken. "...Adriano." The stranger gave a single nod. Matteo frowned. "You know him?" Luca never looked away. "I buried you." Adriano held his gaze. He neither confirmed nor denied it. The silence between them carried the weight of a past no one else in the room understood. Finally, Adriano looked away. His eyes settled on Sofia. For a long moment... He simply stood there. Then, without warning, he walked toward her and lowered himself onto one knee. One fist rested over his heart. "My name is Adriano Vitale." "I served your mother faithfully." Sofia stared at him. "My... mother?" He nodded once. "Before she died, Miss Isabella sent me." "I made her a promise." His voice was calm. Measured. "If the day ever came when she could no longer protect you..." "...I would." He lowered his head. "I failed to save her." "I will not fail her daughter." The room remained silent. Sofia instinctively stepped back. "You don't have to kneel." "I do." "It is a debt I can never repay." Slowly, Adriano rose to his feet. "There is one more thing." He reached inside his coat. Matteo's pistol was drawn in an instant. Adriano ignored him. He withdrew a small silver pendant. Without a word, he walked to Luca's desk and gently placed it on the polished wood. "I recovered this." "It was beneath the sniper's perch." Luca's eyes narrowed. Before he could reach for it— "No..." Sofia's voice was barely a whisper. She hurried forward and snatched the pendant from the desk. Her hands trembled. She turned it over. The tiny scratch beside the clasp. The worn engraving. The dent near the edge. Every mark was painfully familiar. Her breathing faltered. "This..." Her voice cracked. "...belongs to my father." No one spoke. She shook her head. "No." "It can't." "He lost this years ago." Her fingers tightened around the pendant. "Someone must have stolen it." She looked from the pendant to Luca. Then to Adriano. Confusion slowly gave way to fear. The room fell into a suffocating silence. Outside, thunder rolled across the estate. Inside... No one dared break the silence.
