CHAPTER 3: A FRIENDSHIP BEGINS For the rest of the week, Amelia found herself looking forward to seeing Williams. It was strange. She had known him for only a few days, yet their brief conversations had become the highlight of her mornings. Every day before class, she would find him sitting beneath the same tree with his notebook, writing quietly while the rest of the campus rushed around him. And every day, she joined him. At first, they spoke about simple things. Books. Movies. Classes. Dreams. But slowly, their conversations began to go deeper. Amelia learned that Williams loved writing because it allowed him to escape reality for a while. He believed stories had the power to heal people, to inspire them, and sometimes even to save them. "You make it sound magical," Amelia said one morning. Williams smiled. "Maybe it is." She laughed softly. "You really believe that, don't you?" "I do." There was no hesitation in his voice. No doubt. Just certainty. And somehow, Amelia admired that. Most people she knew only believed in things that could make them money. Williams believed in purpose. The difference fascinated her. One afternoon after class, Amelia found him sitting alone in the library. His attention was fixed on a thick textbook. As she approached, she noticed several pages filled with handwritten notes beside him. "You've been here for hours, haven't you?" she asked. Williams looked up and smiled. "Maybe." "You need a better answer than that." "I've been here since noon." Amelia checked the clock. It was almost five o'clock. Her eyes widened. "Five hours?" He shrugged. "Exams are coming." She stared at him. "Do you ever take breaks?" "Sometimes." "Define sometimes." Williams laughed."When my brain stops working." Amelia shook her head. "You need help." "I've survived this long." "That's not an answer." For a moment, they both laughed. It felt natural. Comfortable. Like they had known each other far longer than a few days. As the days passed, their friendship continued to grow. Amelia began sharing things she normally kept to herself. One evening, they sat beneath their usual tree watching students leave campus. The sun painted the sky orange and gold. Everything felt peaceful. Too peaceful. Without thinking, Amelia spoke. "Do you ever feel lonely?" Williams turned toward her. The question surprised him. "What do you mean?" Amelia looked down at her hands. "I mean... surrounded by people but still alone." For a moment, neither spoke. Then Williams nodded. "Sometimes." She looked up. "Really?" "Yeah." Amelia frowned. "I thought people like you wouldn't feel that way." People like you. The words escaped before she could stop them. Williams raised an eyebrow. "People like me?" She immediately regretted saying it. "I didn't mean—" "It's okay." His voice remained calm. "What did you mean?" Amelia hesitated. How could she explain it? How could she admit that she had spent most of her life assuming wealthy people had problems while everyone else had simplicity? "I just mean..." She searched for the right words. "You seem stronger than everyone else." Williams stared at her for a moment. Then he smiled. "Everyone struggles, Amelia." The simplicity of his answer hit her harder than she expected. Everyone struggles. Not just rich people. Not just poor people. Everyone. For some reason, those words stayed with her long after they left campus that evening. A few days later, Amelia's friends noticed something. They were sitting together during lunch when one of them leaned forward. "Okay." "What?" Amelia asked. "What's going on between you and that guy?" Amelia nearly dropped her drink. "What guy?" The girls exchanged knowing looks. "The guy you keep talking to." "The writer." "The one who waits under the tree." Amelia rolled her eyes. "We're friends." One of her friends laughed. "That's what everyone says before they start dating." "We're not dating." "Yet." Amelia groaned. The teasing continued for the rest of lunch. But as annoying as it was, part of her couldn't stop thinking about it. Were they really just friends? The thought made her uncomfortable. Not because she disliked Williams. Quite the opposite. She liked him more than she wanted to admit. That evening, Amelia found herself replaying every conversation they had shared. His smile. His honesty. The way he listened when she spoke. The way he never treated her differently because of her family's wealth. For the first time, someone saw her as Amelia. Not as her father's daughter. Not as a wealthy girl. Just Amelia. And she liked that more than she should. The following week brought an unexpected surprise. As Amelia approached their usual meeting spot, she noticed Williams looked unusually distracted. His notebook sat unopened beside him. His expression was troubled. "What's wrong?" she asked. He forced a smile. "Nothing." "You're a terrible liar." Williams laughed softly. "I've been told that before." Amelia sat beside him. "Talk to me." For several seconds, he remained silent. Finally, he sighed. "My landlord wants the rent by the end of the month." The smile disappeared from Amelia's face. "And?" "And I don't have enough." Her heart sank. For the first time, she saw the reality Williams lived with. While she worried about choosing between luxury handbags, Williams worried about keeping a roof over his head. The difference between their worlds suddenly felt enormous. Yet somehow, it didn't change how she saw him. If anything, it made her admire him more. Because despite everything he faced, he still smiled. He still worked hard. He still dreamed. And he never asked anyone for pity. Amelia looked at him carefully. "You'll figure it out." Williams smiled faintly. "I hope so." "You will." For a moment, their eyes met. Neither looked away. Something shifted between them. Something deeper than friendship. Something neither of them was ready to name. As the afternoon sun warmed the campus, Amelia realized she no longer looked forward to seeing Williams because he was interesting. She looked forward to seeing him because he mattered. And though neither of them knew it yet, the bond forming between them was about to change both of their lives forever
