Chapter 17“Mark? What’s happening? Why did you call?” Khalid had taken a quick shower, changed and was sitting on the sofa in his room, foreboding bad news. “Khalid, finally; Ottawa is jumping up and down. I’m still in Cannes and Osnoir is history but I got word confirming that there is a contract out on Talya. They will get to her if we don’t get her out of the way before she gets killed.” Khalid had been right when he assumed there would be a contract on Talya’s head. He took a moment before he asked, “What do you want me to do?” “Stay with her, Khalid. Just having you beside her will scare them off until I can get to you. But in the meantime, I won’t be able to stop my superior to send for her and to transfer her to Ottawa, or anywhere they see fit, where they’ll want to keep her under protective custody.” “You mean that not only the cartel wants her dead, but your government wants to put her away for a while?” “That’s the picture. So go and get her, please. I will be arriving tomorrow noon – that’s the best I can do.” “Okay. We’ll be either at Talya’s apartment or here at the Sands. I’ll see James...” “No, Khalid, stay away from that office,” Mark cut in brusquely. “Ben Slimane is not joking this time. Don’t let Talya step out of her apartment. I’ll see you soon.” Mark hung up in Khalid’s ear. The latter deposited the receiver carefully in the cradle and stared into space. This game had to stop. He decided to delay his next call until he was sure of a few more facts. He phoned James instead.
