The Man She Left Behind

1243 Words
The penthouse was unusually quiet. Isabella stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, her phone still clutched tightly in her hand. The anonymous messages continued to flash through her mind. "He's returning to the city tomorrow." "And he's asking about you." She slowly lowered herself onto the sofa, trying to steady her breathing. There was only one person the messages could be referring to. Adrian Williams. The man her father had once chosen for her. The man she had broken off her engagement with. The man whose heart she had shattered the day she walked away to marry Ethan. Closing her eyes, Isabella remembered the last conversation they had shared. Five years earlier... "You're making a mistake." Adrian stood beneath the chandelier in the Kingston mansion, his usually calm face filled with disappointment. "I'm sorry." Those had been the only words Isabella could say. "You don't love him more than you'll regret this." "I do love him." Her answer had been firm. Certain. "I love Ethan." Adrian laughed bitterly. "I've spent two years trying to earn your heart." "I'm grateful." "I don't want your gratitude." Silence filled the room. Finally, Adrian nodded. "If you walk away today..." His voice trembled for the first time. "...I won't chase you." She looked away. "I'm sorry." He smiled sadly. "I hope he loves you enough to make all this worth it." Those words had followed her for years. A knock at the bedroom door pulled Isabella back to the present. "Come in." Richard Kingston entered. One glance at his daughter's face told him something was wrong. "What happened?" She hesitated. Then handed him the phone. Richard read the messages. His expression immediately darkened. "So..." He sighed. "He's coming home." "You knew?" Richard nodded. "He called me yesterday." Isabella stared at him. "And you didn't tell me?" "I wanted to." He walked toward the window. "But I also wanted you to have one peaceful evening." She remained silent. Peace. That was something she hadn't experienced in years. "He asked if you were happy." Richard spoke quietly. "I couldn't answer him." Tears filled Isabella's eyes. "Because you didn't know?" "No." Richard looked directly at her. "Because I knew the answer." The room became silent. Painfully silent. Richard had always been brutally honest. Sometimes too honest. This was one of those moments. He sat beside her. "Adrian isn't coming back for business." "I know." "He's coming back because he never stopped loving you." Those words landed heavily. Very heavily. Isabella closed her eyes. Her life was already complicated. She didn't need another chapter from the past reopening. Across the city... Ethan sat alone inside the apartment. The divorce papers remained on the dining table. Unsigned. Untouched. He had left them there intentionally. A reminder. A punishment. Every time he looked at them, he remembered how close he had come to throwing away the woman who loved him most. His phone suddenly rang. "Hello?" "Mr. Carter." It was his assistant. "The board meeting has been moved." "I'm not coming." There was silence. "Sir?" "I said I'm not coming." "But the investors" "They can wait." He ended the call. Business no longer mattered. Not while Isabella was slipping further away from him. Just then, another call came in. This time from an unknown number. He answered cautiously. "Mr. Ethan Carter?" "Yes." "My name is Michael Lawson." "I represent Mr. Adrian Williams." Ethan frowned. "I don't know anyone by that name." "You will." The line went quiet for a moment. "Our boss is returning tomorrow." "...Okay?" "He requested that I inform you personally." Ethan's confusion deepened. "Why?" Michael's next sentence made his blood run cold. "Because Mr. Williams intends to marry Mrs. Isabella Kingston." The world seemed to stop. "What?" "The engagement between their families was never officially announced to the public." "But among high society..." "It was well known." Ethan tightened his grip on the phone. "Who exactly is Adrian Williams?" Michael answered calmly. "The heir to the Williams International Group." One of the country's largest financial empires. Almost as powerful as the Kingston family. Ethan slowly lowered the phone. His heartbeat thundered inside his chest. Another billionaire. Another man. Someone who had loved Isabella before him. Someone who still wanted her. For the first time... Ethan realized he wasn't just fighting for his marriage. He was competing against the kind of life Isabella had left behind. And suddenly... He wasn't sure he could win. The next morning... The private terminal at Lagos International Airport buzzed with activity. Luxury vehicles lined the entrance. Security guards stood at attention. Journalists waited behind barricades. Word had spread quickly. Adrian Williams was returning to Nigeria after five years in London. The heir to Williams International. One of the country's most eligible bachelors. One of the youngest billionaire CEOs in Africa. Richard Kingston stood near the entrance. Beside him was Isabella. She looked uncomfortable. "I don't have to be here." Richard smiled gently. "He's still family." She sighed. Not by blood. But Adrian's late mother and Richard had been close friends. To Richard... Adrian had always been like a son. Moments later, the sleek private jet landed. The aircraft taxied smoothly before coming to a stop. The cabin door opened. A tall figure appeared. Dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal-gray suit. Broad shoulders. Sharp jawline. Confident posture. His dark eyes scanned the crowd. Then... They found Isabella. Everything else disappeared. For five years he had imagined this moment. Thousands of times. Yet nothing prepared him for seeing her again. She looked exactly as he remembered. Beautiful. Elegant. Only... There was sadness in her eyes now. A sadness that hadn't existed before. Adrian slowly descended the stairs. Richard stepped forward first. "Welcome home." Adrian smiled respectfully. "It's good to see you again, Uncle Richard." The two men embraced. Then Adrian turned. Facing Isabella. Neither of them spoke. Five years. Five years of silence. Five years of unanswered questions. Finally... "Hello, Bella." Only Adrian still called her Bella. The nickname instantly brought back memories. She smiled faintly. "Welcome home." Before anyone expected it... Adrian gently pulled her into a hug. Not possessive. Not inappropriate. Simply warm. Comforting. Protective. Across the road... A black sedan had just stopped. Inside the vehicle... Ethan Carter watched everything. His hands tightened around the steering wheel. His jaw clenched. His chest burned. He had followed Richard's convoy after learning where Isabella would be. He only wanted to see her. Instead... He watched another man embrace his wife. And the worst part... She didn't pull away immediately. Ethan suddenly understood something terrifying. For years... He had believed Isabella would always stay. Always forgive. Always wait. But now... There was another man. A man who had loved her before. A man who had never broken her heart. A man who could give her everything Ethan almost destroyed. For the first time since their marriage began... Fear truly gripped Ethan's heart. Not fear of failure. Not fear of losing his company. Not fear of Richard Kingston. The fear of losing the only woman he had ever truly loved. And as Adrian released Isabella from the embrace, he looked directly across the road. Straight at Ethan's car. Their eyes met. Two men. One woman. One broken marriage. One second chance. Adrian's calm expression slowly turned serious. Without looking away from Ethan, he quietly said to Isabella, "Is that your husband?" Isabella slowly turned around. Her heart skipped a beat. Because Ethan was standing beside his car... Watching them.
