The Secret Richard Buried

1120 Words
The words in Victor Blackwood's letter echoed inside the warehouse. "Tell Isabella the truth about her brother... or I will." No one spoke. The smoke from the explosion still lingered in the air, but it was no longer the greatest threat. The truth was. Isabella stared at her father, waiting for him to deny it. "Dad..." Her voice trembled. "Please tell me he's lying." Richard Kingston couldn't bring himself to look at his daughter. His silence shattered her heart. "You told me..." she whispered. "You told me I was your only child." Richard slowly removed his glasses and rubbed his tired eyes. "I believed keeping the truth from you would protect you." "Protect me?" Isabella cried. "By lying to me for my entire life?" Ethan stepped closer to her, but he didn't interrupt. This was something only Richard could explain. Richard let out a long, weary sigh. "Your brother's name was Daniel." The name hung heavily in the air. "He was four years older than you." Isabella's knees weakened. She leaned against Ethan for support. "I had... a brother?" Richard nodded. "Yes." "He adored you from the day you were born." "You were too young to remember him." Tears rolled down Isabella's cheeks. "What happened to him?" Richard looked out through the broken warehouse windows as if the answer was hidden somewhere in the rain. "Twenty-five years ago, someone kidnapped Daniel." Everyone froze. "The kidnappers demanded fifty million naira." "I was prepared to pay every kobo." "But before the exchange could happen..." His voice cracked. "They disappeared." "We searched for him for years." "The police." "Private investigators." "International agencies." "There wasn't a single lead." Eleanor nearly collapsed when the kidnappers stopped calling. Your mother blamed herself every single day." Richard's eyes became moist. "So did I." "We eventually accepted that Daniel was gone." "Gone?" Isabella whispered. "You mean..." "We believed he was dead." Silence followed. The weight of decades of grief settled over them. "But Victor's letter..." Ethan said carefully. Richard nodded. "It means Daniel might still be alive." The possibility hit Isabella like lightning. All these years... She might have had a brother somewhere in the world. Alive. Growing up without his family. Without knowing who he really was. Without knowing he had a little sister waiting for him. Back at the Kingston Estate... Eleanor rushed into Richard's study the moment she heard what had happened. "Richard!" She saw Isabella sitting quietly on the sofa, tears still staining her face. Her heart immediately sank. "You told her." Richard lowered his head. "I had no choice." Eleanor walked slowly toward Isabella. "I'm sorry." Isabella looked up. "You knew too?" Eleanor nodded through tears. "Every day." "I wanted to tell you so many times." "But your father..." Richard interrupted softly. "I asked her not to." "I thought burying the pain was better than making you carry it too." Isabella stood. "No." "You didn't protect me." "You took away my chance to mourn my brother." "You took away my chance to hope." She walked out of the room before anyone could stop her. Ethan watched her disappear down the hallway. He turned to Richard. "You made a mistake." Richard didn't argue. "I know." "It's the biggest mistake of my life." Later that night... Isabella stood alone on the balcony outside her bedroom. The rain had stopped. The city lights sparkled in the distance. She couldn't stop imagining a little boy holding her hand. Teaching her to ride a bicycle. Protecting her at school. Celebrating birthdays together. All the memories she should have had... Had been stolen before they were ever created. A familiar voice broke the silence. "May I join you?" She turned. It was Adrian. He held two cups of hot tea. She managed a weak smile. "I could use that." He handed her one cup. Neither spoke for several minutes. Finally, Adrian said, "I heard about your brother." She nodded. "I don't know what to feel." "You don't have to." She looked at him. "What do you mean?" "You just learned that your life isn't what you thought it was." He smiled gently. "It's okay to be confused." She laughed softly through her tears. "You always know the right thing to say." "I've had years to practice." She smiled for the first time that day. It didn't go unnoticed. Hidden behind the garden hedge... Someone quietly took photographs. Click. Click. Click. The camera captured Adrian placing a comforting hand on Isabella's shoulder. From the angle of the photographs... It looked intimate. Romantic. Exactly as intended. The photographer smiled. "Perfect." Meanwhile... At Carter Enterprises... Ethan refused to go home. Stacks of files covered his desk. The company was still under attack. The board wanted answers. The investors wanted reassurance. But Ethan's mind was somewhere else. Daniel. Who was he? Could Victor really know where Isabella's brother was? Or was it another manipulation? A knock came at his office door. "Come in." His cybersecurity director entered carrying a laptop. "Sir." "We recovered deleted files from Vanessa's company computer." Ethan immediately stood. "What did you find?" The director connected the laptop to the large screen. A hidden folder appeared. Inside were dozens of encrypted files. One file stood out. PROJECT HEIR Ethan frowned. "Open it." The director typed rapidly. The encryption finally broke. Everyone in the room stared at the screen. A profile appeared. Subject: Daniel Kingston Status: Alive Ethan's breath caught. Below it was another line. Current Identity: Unknown Then... One final sentence. Operation enters Phase Two once Subject Daniel discovers the truth. The room became deathly quiet. Ethan whispered, "So Victor has known all along." Across the city... Inside an abandoned church that had been converted into a secret headquarters... Victor Blackwood sat before a fireplace. One of his men approached. "Sir." "The photographs are ready." Victor looked at them one by one. Every picture showed Adrian comforting Isabella. He smiled. "Excellent." The man frowned. "But they're innocent." Victor laughed. "Innocence has never stopped rumors." He handed the photographs back. "Send them anonymously." "To Ethan Carter." "And to every major news outlet." The man nodded. "It will be done." Victor stood and looked at an old family portrait resting on the mantelpiece. In the photograph were four young businessmen. Richard. Edward. Samuel. And himself. He gently touched Samuel's face. "They still think I'm the villain." His expression hardened. "They have no idea..." "...who betrayed whom." For the first time... Victor's eyes filled with something unexpected. Not hatred. Pain. Deep, unresolved pain. Whatever had happened thirty years ago... The truth was far more complicated than anyone realized. And somewhere... A man named Daniel was about to learn that the life he believed was his... Had been a lie from the very beginning.
