45 The Morning After The persistent mid-morning sun forced her eyes open at last, and there was but a split second between confusion and delirious recall. Her body tingled from head to toe. Buffer seemed to recognize the change in her and, keeping his distance at the bottom of her bed, gave her space to understand the change for herself. “Buffer, you know, don’t you? Yip. I am a bona fide woman this morning.” She writhed on her back like a cat using a scratching post. “Gave myself to the man of my dreams. And it was divine. Simply divine.” Then she sat bolt upright, in a panic. “Oh my God, I hope he got back to the camp OK. It was so late.” She lay back down, moving her pillows from under her head to her chest, her mood plummeting. Buffer moved closer in case she needed him. The war
