47 Headlights It was as if Antonio’s damned radio become his very audible ticking time bomb just as the intermittent sharp pain in his side was his constant physical reminder. Just this morning the radio had boomed that U.S. troops had invaded Okinawa in Japan, that the Allies had surrounded more than 300,000 German troops in the Ruhr and, worst of all, that the Allied offensive in northern Italy had begun. All of this, a frightening countdown to his time left with his Iris. Once they’d quickly found the first place in the thicket that gave them privacy, they didn’t know which part of the other they should explore first.
