11 New Beginnings 7 September 1943 Sacks, lights, rolls of remnant fabric, paint and balsa wood were passed via manmade chain, all the way from the Red Cross trucks and into the new mess hall they’d built in the camp. As the last link in the chain, Pietro deposited the donated goods onto the “stage”—newly crafted wooden tables stacked together well in advance of this exciting delivery.
