"Nora, you can't blame me. I never meant to deceive you. I truly wanted you as my mate." Kael fixed his eyes on me, his tone suddenly earnest. "That's exactly why I chose today to tell you the truth."

Moon Goddess above. Did he even hear the words coming out of his own mouth?

"What, you've already forgotten the vows we made? The day you confessed your feelings for me, I told you that you had to be loyal to me." I was so furious I laughed. "Aren't you afraid the Moon Goddess will strike you down for breaking that oath?"

"The Moon Goddess will understand. I did this for the pack. Did you really want to hand your pack over to someone else's child? So Rosaline and I..." He trailed off and turned to look at her.

I had never seen him aim that kind of tender expression at me.

"And then, when the time is right, you'll drive me out of Crimson Hollow." My voice came out quiet.

"You're my mate. Why would I abandon you?" Kael's voice grew louder. "All you have to do is raise this child as the pack's sole heir and take good care of him. We can still live the way we always have. I don't see what's so impossible about that."

But he had already abandoned me.

From the very beginning, he had chosen Rosaline.

And by asking me today, he had never given me the option to refuse.

My mother walked up to us and fixed Kael with a furious glare.

"Back then, you and your mother were nearly killed by vampires. If Nora hadn't taken you to the Wolf King's territory for treatment, you would both be dead. Everyone in the pack opposed your bonding. Nora convinced them all. And she handed over every last bit of alpha authority to you. Has our family not done enough for you? And now you're trying to drive us out of the pack."

The crowd went still. Kael smiled.

"So what? Crimson Hollow has nothing to do with you anymore. You should leave, and quickly. As the current alpha of Crimson Hollow, I'm generous enough to let you stay for one week. After that, you're gone. But honestly, even if you refuse to leave, it won't matter. I'll reclaim your home. The three of you will be left out in the cold."

The wolves around us muttered under their breath.

"If it weren't for Nora, how would he have ever gotten this life?"

"All I can say is, Nora drew the short straw. Betting everything on a wolf like him."

Kael's smile only grew wider.

My father shifted into his wolf form and lunged at Kael. Kael waved a hand, and five towering wolf warriors charged forward, slamming my father to the ground.

"No." I tried to run to him, but more warriors closed in around me and locked me in place. They wrenched at my arms with so much force I thought they might tear me apart.

"So it looks like you don't care about making enemies of my pack after all." Kael looked at me and laughed again. "The three of you are so weak. Do you really think you can survive out there with the rogues?"
