Welcome to the Knight Mansion

Cindy's POV The wedding reception ended on an awkward note. Blake's words still hung in the air like smoke that would not clear. Guests kept whispering about the confrontation, their voices low but their eyes loud with curiosity. I saw them looking at me and Mum, and I wanted to disappear into the floor. Blake did not stay. He left alone without saying one nice word to his father. He just walked out with that cold face, like none of us mattered enough for him to stay. I kept asking myself why his words had cut so deep. Victor came over to us. He looked tired, older somehow than he had looked an hour ago. "I am sorry, Elena. Sorry, Cindy. Blake has struggled a lot since he lost his mother. Please be patient with him. He will come around in time." Mum nodded but I could see the worry in her eyes. I tried to smile for her sake. But inside I felt uneasy, like a stone had settled in my stomach and would not move. Blake's hard stare from earlier would not leave my mind. I told myself it did not matter what one angry man thought of us. But some quiet part of me did not believe that at all. That evening, Victor drove us to the Knight Mansion. I stared out the car window the whole way, watching the city lights turn into dark trees and long empty roads. My whole life had changed in one single day, and I was not sure yet if that was a good thing or a frightening one. When the big iron gates opened, I could not believe my eyes. The mansion was huge. It looked like a palace with tall walls, green gardens, and bright lights glowing from every window. Many servants waited outside to help us with our things. "This is your home now," Victor said with pride. He held Mum's hand gently. "You both deserve this beautiful life." Mum's eyes filled with tears. "I never imagined living in a place like this," she said softly. She hugged me tight, and I hugged her back just as tight. I was happy for her. I truly was. But standing there in front of all that stone and glass, I felt smaller than I had ever felt in my life. This was not my world. I did not know if it ever could be. Inside, the mansion was even more shocking. Shiny marble floors covered every hall, so clean I could almost see my own face in them. Big paintings hung on the walls in golden frames. Cryst lights hung from ceilings so high I had to tilt my head back just to see them properly. Servants moved quietly around us like they were part of the furniture, trained not to be noticed. I followed a kind maid down a long hallway to my new bedroom. When she opened the door, my mouth fell open. The room was larger than our old apartment, maybe even bigger than our old apartment and the hallway outside it combined. It had a huge soft bed piled with pillows, a big wardrobe carved from dark wood, pretty curtains that touched the floor, and my very own bathroom. Everything looked expensive and perfect, like something from a magazine Mum used to look at in the waiting room of the clinic we could never afford to visit properly. I closed the door once the maid left and stood there for a long moment, just looking at everything. Then I unpacked my few clothes. Just some old jeans, a couple of T-shirts, and one plain dress. They looked strange hanging inside that giant wardrobe, like weeds planted in a garden full of roses. I sat on the bed and made a quiet promise to myself. I would not let the money or this luxury change who I was. I was still the same Cindy who used to walk two miles to save bus fare. I would not forget that girl, no matter how soft this new bed felt beneath me. Victor wanted us to eat dinner together as a family that very first night. "We need to start this the right way," he said, and I could hear how much he wanted this to work, how much hope he had folded into those simple words. We sat at a long table in the big dining room, the kind of table that seemed built for twenty people instead of four. The food smelled wonderful, rich and warm, but the air around us felt heavy, like something waiting to happen. Blake came late. He wore casual clothes, a simple black shirt and pants, but he still looked strong and impossible to ignore. He walked past Mum without a single glance, like she was invisible to him. Instead, he pulled out the chair right across from me and sat down without a word. He kept watching me during the whole dinner. His dark eyes stayed fixed on me, unreadable, heavy, impossible to escape. I tried to eat but I felt very uncomfortable under that stare. Every time I looked up, his gaze was already there waiting for me. My face grew warm. Why did he stare at me so much? What was he looking for in my face that made him so angry and so focused all at once? Victor tried to make peace between us. "Blake, why don't you welcome your new family? Elena and Cindy are part of us now." Blake gave a cold smile that never reached his eyes. "Family? I only see strangers living in my mother's house." Silence filled the dining room like water filling a glass. Mum looked hurt. Her face went pale, and I felt something hot rise up inside my chest. I could not stay quiet anymore. "Please, Blake," I said, trying to keep my voice steady and polite. "Do not blame my mother. She had nothing to do with your mother's death. She only wants to make your father a happy man." Blake's eyes darkened. His jaw tightened. For just a moment, something unreadable crossed his face before it vanished behind that same wall of ice he seemed to wear like armor. "Never tell me how to feel, Cindy," he warned. "You know nothing about me or this family." His voice was low and sharp, and the tension in the room made it hard to even breathe properly. I looked down at my plate and wondered how one dinner could feel so much like a battlefield. After dinner, I needed to be alone. I went out to the big garden behind the mansion. The night air was cool against my skin. Flowers smelled sweet around a large stone fountain, and for a moment I let myself forget everything and just breathe. I sat on the edge of the fountain and tried to calm my racing heart. I kept thinking about his words, about the way he looked at me like I was something he could not decide whether to hate or to want. Footsteps sounded behind me on the stone path. Blake had followed me. He cornered me beside the fountain, his tall body blocking my way like a wall I could not climb over. He stood close, closer than I expected, close enough that I could feel the warmth coming off him in the cool night air. "You and your mother will never replace my mother," he said. His voice was hard. that sounded almost like pain hiding behind anger. "If you think you are going to enjoy living in my house, you are mistaken. I will make sure of that." I felt scared, my hands trembling slightly at my sides, but I gathered my courage and looked straight at him anyway. I refused to let him see me shrink. "I never asked to become part of your family," I said. "I only want my mother to be happy. Why can't you understand that?" Blake stepped even closer until we were barely inches apart. My heart pounded so loudly I was sure he could hear it. He slowly lifted his hand and tucked a loose strand of my hair behind my ear. His fingers brushed my skin lightly, and my whole body went still, caught somewhere between fear and something else I did not want to name. Blake's jaw clenched, like he was angry with himself for what he had just done. His fingers curled into a fist at his side. For one heartbeat, it looked as though he wanted to reach for me again. Instead, he took a slow step back, putting distance between us like he needed it to breathe. "Stay away from me, Cindy," he said, his voice rougher than before. "Because if you don't, one day I'll forget you're my stepsister." He looked at me for one long moment, and in that moment I felt like he was seeing straight through every wall I had ever built. Then he turned and walked away without another word, leaving me standing there with my heart still racing. I stood by the fountain long after his footsteps had faded, touching the spot where his fingers had been like it might still be warm. My legs felt weak beneath me. I had entered the Knight family hoping to find a home, a safe place for Mum and me to finally rest after years of struggle. Instead, I had walked straight into the path of the one man who could destroy everything I had, including, I feared, my own heart.
