Stepbrother Stepping Too Close

1236 Words
Cindy's POV I woke up after another restless night. Sleep was hard to find. I kept thinking about being trapped in Blake's bedroom the day before. The way he looked at me with those dark eyes. The way his voice sounded when he warned me never to mention his mother again. My face still felt warm just remembering it, and I pulled the blanket over my head for a moment, trying to push the memory away. I told myself I must stay away from him from now on. Every time we met, something strange or bad happened between us. I needed to be more careful. I decided I would not hide in my room all day like a scared little mouse. This was my new home now, even if it did not feel like it yet. I got dressed and went downstairs to the big kitchen. The servants were already busy preparing breakfast, moving around each other like they had done this a hundred times before. I rolled up my sleeves and started helping them without even asking first. "You don't have to do this, Miss Cindy," one young maid said, looking a little surprised to see me standing there with a knife in my hand. "I want to," I replied with a smile. I chopped vegetables carefully and helped set the long dining table with plates and cups. The work felt good in a simple way. It reminded me of my old life with Mum, back before all of this, back when our kitchen was small and warm and ours alone. The servants slowly began to warm up to me as the morning went on. They laughed when I made a small mistake cracking the eggs and got shell pieces in the bowl. Mrs. Carter, the head housekeeper, watched me quietly from the corner for a while, her arms folded. Later she walked over and said, "You are unlike any rich girl I have met in this house, Miss Cindy. You have a kind heart. Keep it that way, no matter what happens here." Her words made me happy inside. At least some people in this big, cold mansion seemed to like me for who I was. Blake came downstairs while I was still in the kitchen, laughing with the staff about something small and silly. He stood quietly near the doorway and watched me for a moment without saying anything. For one second, his hard face looked different, softer somehow, like he had forgotten why he was supposed to hate me. Our eyes met across the room. I stopped smiling right away, caught off guard. Blake turned and walked away without saying a single word. My heart beat faster than it should have. Why did he keep watching me like that, and why did it bother me so much that he had walked away? Later that morning, Mum took me shopping for new clothes. The mall was huge, bright, and full of expensive stores I had never even dreamed of walking into before. Mum wanted to buy me designer dresses, fancy shoes, and expensive bags. I refused all of it. "I don't need all that, Mum," I said, shaking my head. "Simple clothes are enough for me. I don't want to change who I am just because we live in a big house now." She watched me choose plain jeans, soft T-shirts, and one nice but cheap dress from a smaller shop. Her eyes became watery as she watched me hold up the plain clothes. She hugged me suddenly right there in the store, pulling me close. "You are such a good girl, Cindy. I love you so much." Her voice cracked in the middle of the sentence. It looked like she wanted to tell me something important, something heavy that had been sitting on her chest. Her mouth opened like the words were right there, but then she stopped herself and closed it again. She just smiled instead and paid for the clothes at the counter. I felt confused walking back to the car. Why was Mum acting so strange lately? What was she holding back from me? When we returned to the mansion, Victor called the house phone. "I will be working late tonight," he said to my mum. She also had a charity event to attend that evening. She kissed my cheek gently before she left, telling me to lock my door and rest well. Now I was alone in the huge, quiet mansion with only Blake somewhere inside it. A heavy rainstorm started outside not long after everyone left. Dark clouds covered the sky completely, turning the afternoon into something close to night. Thunder rumbled far away at first, then closer. I tried to read a book curled up in the living room, but the lights suddenly went out with a soft click. The whole mansion fell into darkness all at once. I froze on the couch, my book sliding off my lap. I have always been afraid of thunderstorms because of a bad memory from when I was very small, something I never liked to think about. The loud noise and sudden darkness always scared me more than they should. I stood up slowly and tried to find my way through the dark hallway, my heart already pounding. My hands touched the wall for guidance, feeling along the cold paint. Rain hit the tall windows hard, like tiny fists knocking to get inside. Another loud crack of thunder echoed through the mansion, shaking the windows in their frames. I jumped at the sound and lost my balance on the smooth floor, my foot sliding out from under me. Before I could hit the ground, strong arms caught me around the waist. I gasped out loud in the darkness. The arms held me tight and steady, pulling me back up against something warm and solid. I looked up and saw Blake's dark eyes very close to mine, lit faintly by a flash of lightning outside. His face was only inches away from mine. I could feel his warm breath against my skin. Neither of us moved for a long moment. My hands had landed flat on his chest. His hands were firm and careful on my back, holding me steady. For a few seconds, time seemed to stop completely. The storm continued outside, wild and loud, but everything felt strangely quiet between the two of us. I could smell his scent, clean and familiar now. I could feel the heat coming off his body through his shirt. My heart raced so fast I was sure he could hear it pounding. Then the emergency lights flickered on, dim but bright enough to see by. We both realized at the same moment just how close we were standing together. His arms were still wrapped around me. My body was still pressed against his, our chests almost touching. Blake's eyes darkened as he looked down at me. He did not let go right away. I did not pull away either, even though every part of me knew I should. The air between us felt thick and heavy, hard to breathe through. "It's only us in the house, you would mind we go to my room and cuddle?" My eyes widened. "Cuddle?" "Yes cuddle, as step–siblings" I was speechless but nodded gently. He held me and we walked up to his room.
