Chapter 9

Sunni closed her eyes, trying to block out the noise that filled her ears. The tapping and scratching of pencils, sniffing or coughs coming from people, the shuffling of body parts. Even the whirling sound from the teacher’s computer was loud. If felt like she was having an overload of her senses, or even a panic attack. Yes, most likely a panic attack because there should be no way she could hear everything so clearly. Ever since waking up this morning in a pond and that dream, all those senses from the adrenaline have gotten worse. The sun was too bright, the engine of Archer’s car was too loud, Archer’s scent was- Pressing her fingers against the side of her head, she rubbed it as if it would take away the oncoming headache. She should have just stayed home but she knew her mother would not approve. Her leg started to shake, pressing the ball of her foot against the floor as her heel rocked in the air. Maybe she could sneak away… A warm hand pressed against her back and she sat up straight and turned her head, staring into blue eyes. The meek-looking teenager gave her a gentle smile and suddenly she could smell oakmoss and a hint of orange and suddenly she felt relaxed. She noted a few other students react as well as they seemed to shift their bodies towards them, but not enough to alert the teacher.  More scents hit her gently. Rose, sea salt, jasmine, pine.  Her eyes grew heavy as the smells around her created a comforting barrier before her eyes shot open. Her body jerked tense and she pulled her body away from the male and faced forward, anxiety filling her. ‘What was that?’ The second the bell rang, she fled the room, ignoring the teacher’s concerned call. She didn’t care that she had two more classes left as she ran out the entrance of the school and booked it towards her house. She doesn’t even think she wants to go home now. She just… she didn’t know what she wanted. Coming to a stop before the turn heading to her street, she took a deep breath, counted to five then gave a lengthy exhale, repeating herself as she felt herself calm down. Opening her eyes, she nodded as every one of her senses dimmed down a bit, not a lot but enough to where she wasn’t freaking out. Her jaw ached and so did her hands. As she rubbed her jaw with one hand, she took out her phone and noted that her brother would be out soon, elementary and middle schoolers being released earlier so the buses wouldn’t be overflowed with students. She turned and started jogging towards her brother’s school, intending to pick him up and maybe go for ice cream. She sped up, the thought of the sugary product putting a pep in her step. Ten minutes later she reached the school and saw students filing out as they raced to the buses or to walk home. She waited a couple of minutes, searching around for the messy mop of brown hair. Her brows furrowed as she walked towards the entrance of the school, wincing at the yelling and shouting of the baby teens around her before picking up her brother’s angry cries. ‘’...I’m serious Blake, give it back!’’ A rush of protectiveness filled her as she marched to where her brother was at. A few turns and hallways later, she goes around the corner and anger fills her. In the empty hallway, her baby brother was crowded by three other boys and one girl. The tallest of the group, who looked very similar to someone but she couldn’t figure it out, held her brother’s comic book as Cal tries to jump, only to miss. The group laughs and she was about to shout something when her brother’s damped icy blue eyes hardened as he pushes Blake harshly, but the teen didn’t budge, which was weird since they were similarly built.   Blake didn’t seem to find that funny as he pushed Cal back rather harshly. Cal cries out in pain as his back slams against the locker door and a growl ripped through the air loudly as the lone girl of the group punches her brother.                                                                           ... The group freezes as their heads snap towards her. Blake opened his mouth to taunt the small teen, assuming she was a random member of their pack trying to stick up for the weirdo when he notes the silver eyes of the unfamiliar face. He suddenly pales as he remembers his parents and teachers warning of a recently bit teen. He watches as the girl looks at the frea- Calhoun, the boy holding his stomach as he looks up at her with confusion. “S-sis? What are you doing here?’’ Blake and his friend's stomachs drop in shock that the newly bit wolf was the sister of the person they had been bullying for years. While that normally wouldn’t scare them, since they were werewolves, it was an uncharted area because never had they met a newly turning wolf and therefore didn’t know how to proceed. He mind linked to his best friend next to him to call for help when the silver eyes snap to his form, fear ringing through him as the girl stalks towards him.  “What do you think you're doing to my brother?’’ She says, her tone blank as she grows closer until she stops a few feet away from their huddled group. Her lilac scent was harsh as the anger in her brewed more and more. Though they were children of the moon and could easily overpower her, this technically was a place still filled with humans, so he took a less destructive route and held his hands up, his head bowed a bit but not fully submitting. “Nothing, we were just having a laugh with old Calhoun here, right guys?’’  The girl didn’t seem to relax as his friends hurriedly agreed, growing more tenser as her fists clench.  “Having a laugh huh? Then why is my brother on the ground in pain? I don’t think this is fun for him and well, quite frankly, I don’t find it funny.’’ Before anyone could say anything, there was a flurried motion and a resounding bang filled the air. Blake exhaled as the girl’s face was inches from his and he didn’t have to look behind him to see her fist smashed into the lockers behind him. He hoped his friend had called for help, suddenly growing unsure of the outcome of this.                                                                   …. Sunni doesn’t recall ever moving this fast as she slammed her fist into the lockers next to the middle schooler’s head. She didn’t plan on hurting the teens, she wasn’t that big of a monster, but something in her demanded her to instill fear into the punks that harmed her brother.  She didn’t notice the clawed nailed coming out of her hands, nor the way her brother’s blue eyes stared at her hands in silent horror as he turned to his sister. He freaked out a bit more as her normally grey eyes were glowing silver. Sunni’s hand pulled away from the locker, ignoring the way the door fell to the ground with a clanking noise, and placed her hand on, whom she assumed was, Blake’s shoulder and gave a harsh squeeze, feeling satisfaction at the wince he gave. “I’m only going to tell you this one and one time only. Leave my brother alone. If I find out you or any of your little friends messing with him, I will make this my problem and solve it myself. Got it?’’ Then the teen didn’t answer, a rumble in her chest grew loud as she moved her hand to ball the front of his shirt and push him back into the dented lockers. She leaned closer and could see the fear in the boy’s eyes. While she did feel bad about doing this, her brother was hers and she was going to protect what was hers. “I said, Do. You. Understand?’ This time the teen nodded shakingly and before she lets him go, a calm voice calls out. “Sunni, please release my brother.’’ Sunni looks up to see Aster walking towards them, cautiously as if she was a wild animal. She suddenly felt like one as the anger clears from her senses. She shakingly releases Blake and pulls away,  ignoring the group of teens scurrying away from her as she stared at her hands in confusion and fear, then to the lockers. She did that. She could have done that to someone.  She felt tears fill her eyes and before she could run away, arms wrap around her and the scent of cinnamon and oranges fill her nose. She looks down to see Cal staring at her with wide fearful but determined eyes. She sniffs as tears spilled from her face. Her brother saw what she did. She scared him. She wasn’t supposed to scare him, she was supposed to protect him, be the knight in shining armor, not the monster itself. She pulls him into a tight hug, not missing the way he tenses and his scent sours a bit and she weeps out apology after apology. It stayed that way for a few moments before a hand lands on her shoulder. She looks up into the familiar hard blue eyes of Archer’s father. “Sunni, we need to speak immediately.’’ She could only nod numbly as she was pulled away from Cal, who protested loudly. “Stop! She didn’t mean it! Don’t take her away.’’ Her brother’s voice grew in a high-pitched cry and she could only watch as Aster grab Cal’s arm and turn him towards him, trying to calm him down.  She turned away as William pulled her towards a black car, trusting Aster to take care of her brothe- Oh god, she threatened his brother!  She buries her face into her hands as she shakingly holds back tears throughout the car ride.
