Heat Beneath the Skin

911 Words
The world is quiet again. But it’s a different kind of quiet. Not the suffocating stillness of fear, but something suspended. Fragile. Breathless. Kael carries me through the doorway like I weigh nothing, his arm locked behind my back, his chest solid against my side. The heat of him bleeds into me, warming places I didn’t realize had gone numb. He sets me down gently on the edge of the bed—my bed—and the realization hits like a punch. This is the same room I’ve been broken in a hundred times. But it doesn’t feel like mine anymore. Not with him standing in it. Kael doesn’t speak right away. He kneels in front of me, head lowered, his hands hovering just above my knees, like he wants to touch me but doesn’t know if I’ll break from it. “Ivy,” he says softly. “Tell me where it hurts.” Everywhere. But I can’t say that. Instead, I look at him—really look. There’s blood on his knuckles. A wildness in his eyes he’s trying to cage. He’s still breathing hard. Like holding back took more effort than giving in. “I’m fine,” I whisper. His jaw tightens. “No, you’re not.” His voice is hoarse now, rough around the edges. “Don’t lie to me. Not about this.” Something cracks inside me. “I don’t know how to be touched,” I blurt. “Not... like this. Not like I matter.” Kael’s expression softens. Pain flickers behind his eyes—but not the kind meant for him. The kind someone feels for you. “You do matter,” he says. “You always did.” He reaches up slowly, gives me time to flinch, time to run. But I don’t. I sit there frozen as his hand cups my cheek, so gently it makes me want to scream. Because that’s what it was never like—gentle. My throat tightens, tears burning behind my eyes. “You don’t have to be afraid of me,” Kael says. “Even if part of you is. I’ll wait for the part that isn’t.” His thumb brushes a stray tear from my face. And then he does something dangerous. He leans closer. Close enough to feel his breath against my skin. Close enough that I can count every tiny gold fleck in his eyes. He smells like pine and cold air and something darker—like smoke that hasn’t finished burning. “You’re not broken,” he whispers. “You’re surviving.” His lips are so close I can taste the words. “Kael,” I breathe. He closes his eyes like it hurts to hear his name on my lips. “If I kiss you right now, I won’t stop.” My heart slams against my ribs. “I’m not ready,” I say—though every part of me is aching, pulling toward him like gravity. “I know,” he says. And still, he doesn’t move away. “But gods help me, I want to be the one who makes you ready. Not by pushing. Not by taking. Just... being here.” His forehead rests gently against mine. Not a kiss. But almost worse. More intimate. More everything. His hand moves to the side of my neck, thumb brushing the bruise forming there. The one Nathan left. A deep growl rises from Kael’s chest. “You’re mine,” he whispers—not a claim of possession, but of promise. “And no one touches what’s mine like that again.” I don’t correct him. Because somewhere deep down… my wolf doesn’t want to. She stretches inside me, alert, aware. And for the first time, I feel her. Really feel her. Not as a whisper, but as a second heartbeat pounding inside me. Kael must sense it. His eyes widen slightly, pupils dilating. “You feel that?” he asks. I nod slowly. His lips part, like he’s about to say something else. But he doesn’t. Instead, he pulls away. Barely. Just enough to stop the ache from turning into a wildfire. “You should rest,” he murmurs. “I’ll stay. Just outside the door.” “I don’t want you outside,” I whisper. That surprises him. His brow lifts, just slightly. “You don’t have to stay with me,” I add quickly, cheeks burning. “Just… not far.” Kael straightens, then hesitates. “If I lie beside you,” he says, voice barely above a whisper, “I won’t touch you. Not unless you ask me to.” The tension between us coils so tight it might snap. “Okay,” I breathe. He climbs onto the bed, his movements slow, deliberate. He stays above the covers, facing me, close but not touching. The air between us crackles. I turn to my side. He mirrors me. Our faces are inches apart. His eyes drop to my lips. My breath catches. But he doesn’t move. He keeps his promise. The ache in my chest deepens—not from pain this time, but from something I never thought I’d feel again. Hope. “Ivy,” he says, voice low and rough. “When you’re ready... I’ll burn the world for you.” I fall asleep to the sound of his breathing. And for the first time in my life, I don’t dream of escape. I dream of fire.
