Ivy awoke with a start, her breath sharp, as though she’d been holding it underwater for too long. The remnants of her dream lingered, dark and disorienting. The forest—deep and silent, except for the pulse of blood beneath her skin. A figure—tall, shadowed—looming over her, his touch like fire against her skin, but he was no stranger. His eyes, dark and knowing, burned into her soul. The air around her had been thick with power, heavy and intoxicating, and for the first time in years, she’d felt alive—but in the worst possible way. Her chest tightened. The power in the dream hadn’t been just hers. She could feel it still, thrumming beneath her ribs. Her wolf, waking. The beast that had been dormant for years, silent and contained, had stirred with an intensity that made her shiver. A deep, ancient hunger had gnawed at her insides, urging her to give in, to release it. I’m not ready for this, she thought, pushing the covers off with trembling hands. Her feet hit the cold floor, the chill seeping into her bones. She couldn’t stay here, couldn’t let the darkness of that dream—or whatever the hell was happening to her—consume her. She needed space, air, distance. But the moment she stood, she felt it. A presence. A weight. Like something—or someone—was pressing against her, almost suffocating her. She froze, her heart thundering in her chest. Her senses were on fire. Her skin tingled, her breath shallow, and she knew—he was here. Turning slowly, her pulse raced faster. Her gaze swept the room, and there, in the doorway, he stood. Kael. His tall frame filled the doorway, his posture casual but unnervingly calm. The light from the hallway framed him in shadow, but there was no mistaking the intensity of his eyes as they locked onto hers. Dark, fathomless, unreadable—but beneath them, something else stirred. Something dangerous. Ivy’s throat went dry. Her instincts screamed for her to run, to fight, to do anything but face him. But her feet were rooted to the floor, her body frozen in place, like the universe had conspired to trap her in this moment, this room, with him. Kael’s gaze softened, just a fraction, but his voice remained steady, low, as though he were speaking to a wounded animal. "I didn’t mean to startle you." Her breath caught, the weight of his presence pressing down on her, making her skin flush with heat. His voice was smooth, rich, like velvet over steel. But there was something else in it—something hard and unyielding that sent a shiver down her spine. "What are you doing here?" Ivy’s voice was barely a whisper, strained, as if she could barely summon the strength to ask the question. Kael stepped forward, slow and deliberate, his dark eyes never leaving hers. He moved with purpose, like he knew exactly what he wanted, and Ivy... Ivy was in the way. “I thought you’d feel it,” he said, his words slipping through the thick tension in the room like a blade. “I’m here because you need me.” The words hit Ivy like a punch to the gut. Need him? Her body clenched in response, her wolf growling, a dark force rising from deep inside her, urging her to get closer, to surrender. Ivy fought it, clamping down on the flare of heat that swept through her, trying to push it down, to keep her control intact. She couldn’t let him get to her. She wouldn’t. Not again. “I don’t need you,” Ivy snapped, her voice hoarse with a mixture of fear and fury. She took a step back, her pulse quickening as her body screamed to run, to escape this suffocating tension. “Stay away from me.” Kael paused, the briefest flicker of something—amusement?—passing over his face. He didn’t step back. Didn’t break the space between them. Instead, he took another step closer, forcing her to tilt her head back to maintain eye contact. “You can’t outrun this, Ivy.” His voice was low, gravelly, and his words wrapped around her like chains. “You can’t hide from what’s awakening inside you.” The breath caught in her throat. He knew. He knew what she was feeling, what was happening to her. And she didn’t even understand it herself. Her heart pounded in her chest, each beat a drum of fear and something else—something raw, something dangerous. She could feel the tension crackling between them, thick and electric, the space between them charged with the heat of an attraction she couldn’t deny, no matter how hard she tried. “I don’t want this,” she whispered, though the words felt like a lie on her tongue. Her body screamed the opposite. She wanted him—wanted to feel the fire that burned in his gaze, the heat of his proximity. Wanted to be consumed by the danger he represented. Kael’s lips curled slightly, an unreadable expression flickering across his face. He didn’t answer her, but he didn’t have to. His presence was enough, as though his every movement spoke volumes. He stepped closer, just inches away now, and Ivy could feel the heat radiating off his body, the raw power in his presence. She swallowed, forcing herself to breathe evenly, but every instinct in her screamed to touch him. To let the wolf inside her take control. “You’ve always known,” Kael murmured, his voice a whisper of silk. “You’ve always felt it, Ivy. The pull. The fire.” Her breath hitched as he reached out, his fingers brushing lightly against her arm. The touch was like lightning, shooting through her veins, setting her skin on fire. The world seemed to blur, the only thing clear was the magnetism between them—something ancient and undeniable. “I—I don’t understand,” Ivy gasped, her chest tightening. “What do you want from me?” Kael’s gaze softened, though his eyes still burned with an intensity that made her pulse race. “I don’t want anything from you, Ivy. I’m here to help you. To guide you.” Ivy shook her head, disoriented by the wave of emotions crashing over her. “I don’t need your help.” His fingers lingered on her arm for a heartbeat longer before he let go, stepping back slightly, but the space between them remained charged, electric. “You think you’re alone in this,” Kael said, his voice low and knowing. “But you’re not.” Ivy’s heart thudded against her ribs, her pulse thumping in her ears. Her wolf was clawing at her, urging her to step forward, to surrender, to give in. Ivy could feel the tension in her every muscle, the struggle between her human side and the wild thing awakening within her. But she couldn’t let go. Not yet. Not when she had no idea what this would mean for her, for her future. “I won’t let you control me,” Ivy whispered, the words fierce and defiant, even though a part of her longed to break down the walls she’d built around herself. Kael’s lips quirked in a small, almost tender smile. “I’m not here to control you, Ivy. But I can’t let you do this alone. Not when you don’t even know what you’re capable of.” The weight of his words pressed down on her, and for the first time, Ivy realized how much she needed to understand, to have answers. But at what cost? Her wolf howled inside her, the call of the wild too strong to ignore.
