Preface

The moon brightly shone amidst the skies, illuminating the earth with a phenomenal white glow. Lightning struck, matching the loud cry of a woman struggling to push the fetus out of her. She yelped yet again in pain, the lightning thumped again. For the third time, the lightning sound and her cries mixed but the striking of the lightning overshadowed her faint cries this time. She heaved a drained sigh when the tiny cry of the little pup was heard. With that, she fell on her back and closed her eyes. "Congratulations, Kai. Your mate has just been put to bed." The pack's doctor came out to announce the birth of the little pup. However, a small scowl marred her expression as she stopped talking. "But there is a problem." She bit the inside of her cheeks. Pursing her lips, she stared intently into Kai's eyes. "What's the problem?" Kai asked, impatience laced in his deep baritone voice. "Your mate didn't survive, I am sorry." The pack's Doctor said bitterly. She shut her eyes and let the pain seep through her. Lena was kind while she lived, she was a great warrior. She knew she was going to die, but still, she decided to give her child a chance to see the world. "She was a great woman, she will forever be remembered in the Redmoon pack." She said again. When Kai didn't say a word to her, she touched his scapula and said. "The shaman will be here to predict the pup's future. Put yourself together and get prepared." She left him alone after that. Kai dropped to the floor when the Doctor was gone, tightly gripping the handle of the wooden bench that was outside the Doctor's quarters. Through gritted teeth, he screamed and cried out to the moon goddess, blaming her for taking his mate away from him. The Shaman had predicted the death of either Lena, his mate or her unborn pup when they found out she was pregnant. It had been the greatest news in their lives, mated for over thirty years without a pup broke their hearts all the time. And when Lena got pregnant, she knew she just had to do all she had to do to save her child. And through the intervention of the witches in the pack, the death was transferred to her instead of the innocent pup. "I have seen other wolves give birth to their pups healthily. I have celebrated with wolves but here I am, wallowing in the death of my mate. Tell me, moon goddess, how do I live without Lena?" He cried out again. The tears sporadically cascaded down his cheeks, he was pained, hurt, and confused. His mate was the one who gave meaning to his existence and now that she was gone, he was scared he would fail without her. - - The loud sound of metal jingling and meeting the ground jolted Kai out of his reverie. He hoisted his head towards the direction of the sound and glimpsed the shaman was approaching. He straightened up to welcome him. The shaman who was covered in all white satin material ceased in his tracks when he sighted Kai, he did some incantations and asked that the pup be brought out. Kai, who hadn't seen the child since she was born, gently walked into the delivery room. He shut the door as soon as he stepped in. Lena's corpse had been wrapped in a white cloth, ready to be buried. His knees dropped to the cold floor as he walked closer to her. He got to where she was placed and slowly lifted the cloth from her face. She looked so pale, her eyes were closed, and her lips slightly bent in a smile. "Did she give a name to the pup before dying?" He asked the Doctor, tears brimming at the corner of his eyes. He couldn't bear to see his mate in that state, the pain was excruciating. "Isla, that was the name she kept mumbling before the pup was pushed out of her womb." The pack's Doctor replied to him. Kai nodded his head, "The shaman is here, he wants to see the pup and predict her future." He informed them and left the room immediately. He couldn't bear more of the pain as he watched the corpse of his once bright mate. After some minutes, the crying of the pup pierced through the night, she was crying so loud as the shaman firmly held her with both hands. "Why haven't you touched your daughter?" The shaman asked Kai. "I don't know, I can't bear the pain. I don't know what to do with her." Kai responded confusingly. "Here, hold her in your hands while I make some consultations." He handed the baby to Kai. Kai took her from the shaman's hands. He glanced at her large amber-green eyes as she innocently squinted them. She was the replica of Lena. They have the same blonde skin, curly dark hair, and large amber-green eyes. The little girl scratched her eyes with her small claws and made a sound that melted his heart. The shaman spread a white cloth on the ground and sat on it. He brought out some beads, extended them next to the burning flame, whispered some words, and suddenly jerked back in terror. "She has an extraordinary power," he informed Kai. The Doctor was now back in the room. Only parents of the newly born pup were allowed to stay and listen to what their futures held." "An extraordinary power?" Kai was confused. "What's that?" "I don't know it either, it's so vague I can't see through it. But she will get to know herself when she's older." The shaman continued with the incantations. Kai looked at his innocent daughter who was bubbling in his arms, tears welling in the corner of his eyes. Why did it have to be him, his family who always had a problem? "There are curses too," the shaman said. "Curses?" Kai widened his eyes, gaping at the shaman, he looked back at his child. "She was born without a mate and she will be a thing of satisfaction for men." "What do you mean?" Kai was confused. "As I have said before, her destiny is vague, I can't see vividly. This is all I can see for now." The shaman packed his things into his knapsack and rose to his feet. He touched Kai's shoulder and stared into his eyes. "The child is going to be a blessing and a curse." With that said, he walked away from Kai. Digging his staff into the ground, he sang a song of incantations to the moon goddess and the witches. Kai stared at his child, there was nothing he could do than to protect her and help her find her purpose. "Isla, I will protect you for as long as I live." He promised, tracing kisses down her tiny hands. He looked up, praying to the moon goddess and the luminous night stars to seal his promise to his daughter.
