Chloe's POV
"Your mission there is to get everything, every information I need, don't get too comfortable in your honeymoon phase."
I sat up not believing my ears "what do you mean Dad? Isn't this supposed to be for a merger? You said it yourself, didn't you?" I asked confused.
"Don't act like a kid, I've shown you everything you need to understand in this business but you keep acting like a new comer, no one is actually your friend, you have to be alert always."
Typical of my Dad, he had just woken me with his call to break it to me that marrying Grayson was for no merger, instead, he had planted me as a spy to give him information, report every financial decision they made.
How low does he have to go? And what was he ready to exchange me for in pursuit of the success of his company?
"I can't do that Father, it's bad enough that I have to be here till God knows when, now you're turning me into a mole? What if I get caught? Do you think Mr. Coleman would spare me?"
"Princess, you have to try your best to not get caught, you can't afford to get caught."
What was he saying? He had lied to me and placed this big Burden on me and now he doesn't even care if anything goes wrong.
"I can't father." I blurted out.
I could tell my words had come to him as a blow.
"Then maybe you don't want to leave that marriage any sooner, you'll be stuck there and I won't lift a finger if anything happens to you. Don't push me Chloe, you don't want to know the man you call your father." He retorted.
His words scared me, this was the sort of things he would say when he wanted me to do things against my wish, how was he even my father?
"Call me when you have good information on what they're planning to do with the A15 project, that's my target for now, I won't repeat myself Chloe." He added before ending the call.
I dropped my phone on the bed and laid back down. I knew there was something fishy about the marriage when he said it was a merger.
Mr Coleman has been Dad's business associate for a while now, so how did it get to using marriage as a means to gather information?
I stood up from the bed and made my way outside my room, this was one of those mornings I was grateful that I didn't share a room with him.
"Good morning ma." The help greeted me as I came out.
"Morning, Is there anything to eat? I'm famished." I said rubbing my stomach, I had forgotten to eat before going to bed the previous night.
"Yes ma, I was about to serve breakfast." She replied softly.
"And Grayson?"
"He left some minutes ago, his dad called."
I nodded.
I sat on the dining table waiting for her to serve the meal but my mind was elsewhere. As much I wanted to leave this marriage as soon as possible, was I ready to do the work?
Standing up from my seat, I made my way to his study. Maybe if I used this opportunity well, I would be done in no time.
I pushed the door open, I had decided to do what my father wanted.
~•~
His study was neatly arranged, there were lots of books and files, he was handling his father's company and the man supervised from behind, so I knew there would be something on the said project here.
I brought out my phone and dialed my father's number "Dad, I'm in his study now he's not home. What exactly are you looking for?"
"That's my girl, now I need you to look for the document that contains their drafts and plans, take a picture of everything and send it to me."
"Also look for the document that contains Stakeholders signatures, I'll need that too for now. Try not to get caught." He said and ended the call.
I walked to his table, it was already filled with documents and going through them to find the right one would take a lot of time.
"Why's his table this messed up?" I cursed under my breath as I began going through the papers, my heart slamming hard against my chest.
This was stealing and the last thing I wanted was to get caught in the act, I needed to be fast so I can leave before he comes back home.
Soon enough, I found the consent form my father had demanded I brought to him, I tucked it under my arm and continued my search for the A15 project paper.
I moved from the table to the shelves, hoping I would come across something that would strike my curiosity. I didn't know what it looked like but I was willing to work with my intuition.
My phone rang, pulling my attention from the stack of files I was going through.
"Have you found anything?" My father asked, his impatience evident in his voice.
"I got the stakeholders signature stuff, I think I'll have to leave now and come back some other day, he will soon be back home."
"Don't leave that place until you find the file, I need everything by today's evening, I'll call your husband to tell him that I need to see you." He barked at me and ended the call on me again.
I sighed and continued looking through the file. I had spent close to an hour in his study and staying here any further would get me in trouble.
I went to the last stack of documents, bending down, I began going through it one after the other until my eyes caught something.
I made to pick it up but the door imme diately swung open, making me stop abruptly.
"What are you doing here?"
I froze.
