The mansion was silent once the guests had dispersed, the echo of footsteps fading into nothing. Clara stood in their bedroom, her hands trembling as she adjusted her white silk dress. The room was large, luxurious—everything she had imagined and more. But none of it mattered. None of it mattered when she was faced with *him*. Javier stood by the window, looking out into the dark night. His back was turned to her, but Clara could feel the presence of his gaze, like a heavy weight pressing down on her shoulders. The man she had married—out of necessity, not choice—was a mystery. He was dangerous, cold, calculating, yet there was something about him that made her pulse race. “Javier,” she said quietly, her voice barely a whisper. “Why me?” He didn’t turn around immediately, his eyes still locked on the world outside. But when he did, there was something unreadable in his gaze. “Because you’re not what I expected,” he replied, his voice low, almost a growl. “And I don’t play by anyone’s rules. Not even my own.” Clara’s breath caught as he took a step closer, his tall frame shadowing hers. The space between them seemed to shrink, his presence suffocating, and yet—compelling. She could feel the heat radiating off him, the undeniable pull of his body. Javier raised a hand, his fingers brushing against her cheek, his touch surprisingly tender. It was the first time she felt him close to her—not as a man bound by duty, but as someone who might want her for reasons other than a contract. “You don’t have to do this,” Clara whispered, a fragile plea in her voice. She didn’t know what she was asking for. She didn’t know how to feel about this man, this stranger who was now her husband. His lips curled into a small smile, one that didn’t reach his eyes. “This isn’t about what you *have* to do,” he said, his fingers trailing down her neck to the base of her spine. “It’s about what we *both* want.” ---
