The Positive Test

1832 Words
M All night, Lyanna Blackwood was trying to not get into trouble with Kieran Nightfang. Unfortunately, it was getting harder and harder to avoid him. One of the biggest social events of the season was the charity banquet organized by the Mooncrest Pack. The grand ballroom was packed with alphas, Lunas, nobles and council members. A soft music was played in the background and servants walked among the people bringing trays of drinks and food. If not, Lyanna would have been able to get through the event without any trouble. Tonight was different. Seraphina Vale's warning wouldn't leave her mind. Seraphina had cornered her earlier that evening, near one of the balconies. The woman's smile was polite but her eyes were sharp. Seraphina put her hands on her hips and looked at Lyanna. “You and Kieran appear to be pretty close these days.” Lyanna was immediately forced to express a calm face. “We’re family.” A soft laugh escaped Seraphina's lips. “Of course.” It was a non-threatening reply. It wasn’t. Seraphina leaned closer, slightly. “Beware, Lyanna. People watch more than you realize.” Then she had walked away, she and her son. This talk had only just begun. It made Lyanna uncomfortable, however, throughout the evening. She stood now near one side of the ballroom, with a glass of water in her hand, which she had scarcely touched. Each time she glanced across the room, she was looking for Kieran. Whenever she caught his gaze, she averted her eyes. It was getting very tiring. Three months. Three months' silence. It's been three months since those stolen moments. Three months of guilt. It twisted her tummy.Suddenly, she felt the urge to vomit. Lyanna put her hand right on her belly. Something felt wrong. Initially she thought it was stress. The previous few weeks had been too much to handle. She was constantly drained, between keeping the secret of her relationship with Kieran and the façade of Ronan's mate. Another wave of sickness hit. This one was a bit stronger. Lyanna quietly set her glass onto a nearby table. She needed air. Fast. Sadly, before she could leave, she saw Kieran making his way through the crowd towards her. She became immediately nervous at the sight. Not that she didn’t want to see him. She didn't want to miss him. Kieran held his breath a few feet away, and frowned at her face. “Lyanna?” Lyanna quickly turned her head away. “I’m fine.” Kieran clearly didn’t believe her. “You are not fine, what is wrong with you?” Another wave of nausea rolled through her. Lyanna clenched her lips. “Some air would be good.” Kieran stepped closer. “Would you like me to go with you?” Lyanna shook her head rapidly. “No.” The response was too quick. Too desperately. Kieran noticed. Of course he did. Kieran spoke quietly. “Did something happen?” Lyanna's first thought was towards Seraphina's warning. She didn’t want to discuss it here. Not in public. Is not in a place where someone may be looking. A slight smile was forced on Lyanna's lips. “Nothing happened.” Kieran studied her thoroughly. “You’re lying.” She was still trying to get her bearings when another episode of dizziness came. The temperature in the room instantly changed. The music was louder. The people became suffocated. Lyanna took hold on the table near her for support. Kieran’s curiosity got the better of him and he moved toward the object. Kieren's face looked worried. “Lyanna.” Lyanna shook her head. “I’m going home.” Kieran frowned. “I’ll drive you.” Lyanna immediately disagreed. “No.” She didn't need any more attention. Lyanna straightened slowly. “Don't go anywhere, people will know if we go off together.” Kieran definitely didn't like the thought. Unfortunately, he knew that she was right. Kieran reluctantly nodded. If you need anything, call me.” Lyanna looked away from him. “I won’t.” Kieran looked at her as if he knew what she was up to. “You should.” Lyanna didn't wait for an answer, but she turned around and walked to the door. The whole journey back home was terrible. When she reached Silverwood Estate, she was very tired. She barely got to her room before lying down on the bed. She just lay there for almost an hour. Trying to rest. Trying to think. Doing their best not to get sick. One day, an unsettling idea arose in her mind. Her eyes slowly opened. After that, she sat up. The coldness in her tummy grew. She gazed at the calendar on her desk. She just looked at it for a few moments. Next she began to count. Days. Weeks. Dates. She felt a blow to her soul. She was late. Very late. Lyanna immediately stood. “No.” She couldn't stop it from escaping, the word was. Her heart pounded. She had been feeling cramping of late. She had taken it for granted that it was stress. Or exhaustion. Or the outcome of all the things that have been going on in her life. She had never thought of any other. She couldn't think of anything else now. On the following morning Lyanna went off alone from the estate. She said that she wished to go to a couple of local stores. Nobody questioned her. After an hour, she ended up in a small pharmacy in the nearby town. She shook her hands as she was buying. The old woman behind the counter appeared not to be suspicious. But to Lyanna it sounded like everyone knew what she was purchasing. The way home to the estate seemed like a long, long way. After finally arriving at her room, she closed the door right away. Then she looked down at the little box in her hands. A sense of fear clutched at her chest. One of her intended uses was to throw it away. She wanted to pretend that none of this could be true. Rather, she opened the box. After a few moments, Lyanna was seated at the edge of her bed looking at the answer. Positive. Her vision blurred. “No.” She picked up the test once again. There was no change in the answer. Positive. She began to take irregular breaths. Maybe it was wrong. Perhaps the test was faulty. Maybe— Unable to come up with any other explanation, Lyanna opened the second test. Then the third. If both of those showed up then all her hope was lost. Positive. Positive. Positive. Three tests. Three answers. One truth. She was pregnant. Slowly, Lyanna lowered her hands in her lap. All her body was numb. The room was very quiet. The room was eerily silent. But her thoughts were deafening. The father was well known. None. Ronan had only slept in the bed with them one night when they mated. That was several months ago. They had maintained a cold and distant relationship since then. But Kieran… She felt a new terror come over her. Kieran's baby had been born. Without question. Without doubt. It made her feel both terrified and heartbroken. She cried tears of sadness. All was on the verge of falling apart. Her marriage. Her family. Kieran's friendship with Ronan. The Nightfang Bloodline. Everything. Lyanna just sat there for several minutes, not wanting to cry. Finally, she leaned for her mobile phone. She could only trust one person with this. Aria. Her best friend responded almost instantly. A cheerful voice came out of the speaker, it was Aria. “Lyanna?” When Lyanna attempted to speak her voice broke. Lyanna put her hand to her mouth. “Aria…” Aria was no longer smiling, but was now worried. Aria leapt up on the other side of the phone. “What’s wrong?” Tears streamed down Lyanna's face. May you come over?” Aria didn’t hesitate. I'm going away now. Aria was soon at the estate, less than an hour later. When she walked in and noticed lyanna's face something just wasn't right. Aria sprinted towards the room. “What happened?” Lyanna silently handed her the tests. Aria looked down. Then looked again. Her eyes widened. Aria slowly let the tests down. “Oh, Goddess.” There was silence in the room. Aria then sat next to her. Aria took a deep breath. “How sure are you?” Through her tears, Lyanna laughed weakly. “Three tests sure.” Aria shut her eyes for a moment. The truth of the matter came down upon the two women. Aria grabbed hold of Lyanna's hand. “Does Ronan know?” Lyanna immediately shook her head. “No.” Aria hesitated. “And the father?” Lyanna's eyes again filled with tears. Lyanna lowered her head to her lap. “You already know.” But Aria was not quick to respond. She didn’t need to. Both the women knew the truth. Lastly, Aria squeezed her hand. Aria spoke quietly. “It's time to get rid of Kieran.” The words were like a knife. Lyanna gazed at her in amazement. “What?” Aria's face was filled with compassion. “You heard me.” Lyanna shook her head right away. “No.” Aria leaned forward. “Lyanna, hear me. Lyanna dabbed at her tears. “I can’t.” Aria's voice grew stiffer. “You have to.” The room was so quiet that you could hear a mouse. Aria whispered. Because it's "For your own safety. Lyanna glared her. Aria continued carefully. It's impossible for anybody to know that child is Kieran's. The reality of those words crushed her. Aria stared her into the eyes. This baby is Ronan's as far as everybody else is concerned. Lyanna felt sick. Actually sick. Lyanna shook her head. “Well, I can't tell a lie about that.” Aria looked down at his face, giving him a pained smile. “You may not be able to help it. Lyanna's tears flowed fresh down her cheeks. It was harder for her than she realised to accept the loss of Kieran. Much more. Lyanna whispered brokenly. “I love him.” Aria's face instantly softened. She embraced him.Aria wrapped her arms around her. “I know.” That merely caused Lyanna to cry even more. Aria just held on to her for several minutes while she cried. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, which rang through the room. Both women froze. Lyanna turned towards the door to the bedroom. Another knock followed. Just before either woman could lift a foot off the ground came a familiar male voice from the hallway. Kieran was calling from outside the door. “Lyanna?” Lyanna's face turned as white as a sheet of white paper. Kieran knocked again. “Lyanna – are you in there?”
