Miguel's Discovery

292 Words
Jealousy is a quiet thief until it becomes a roaring thing. Miguel’s suspicion had been simmering for weeks — the unanswered calls, the opaque replies, the way Isabella’s smile sometimes faltered. He told himself it was nothing; then last night the nothing turned concrete. A message, a name, a plan — he saw Enrique’s name threaded through Isabella’s phone like a scarlet ribbon. He did not plan to look. He told himself he wouldn’t. But the phone sat warm in his hand while she showered; her password was written on a scrap of paper he’d seen and then thrown away. When the messages revealed themselves, each line felt like a betrayal he had no right to make and yet could not unsee. Plans for a future. Little intimacies. A man older, patient, and earnest — a man writing of permanence in ways Miguel had once promised but failed to deliver. When Isabella stepped out and wrapped herself in a towel, Miguel’s world had already tilted. He was not the furious, crashing thing he’d imagined earlier; his anger was quieter, edged with a deeper, surprising hurt. “Who is Enrique?” he asked, voice low and blue like old bruises. Her hesitation answered him before her words could. In the pause that followed, their private history — the investment she had lost, the nights she had cried, the times he had begged for patience — turned inside out. Miguel felt tricked, used, and suddenly ashamed of the ferocity of his own hope. He had lied to her. She had loved him again. Now he stood with the evidence of her divided life and could not tell whether the sting he felt was for himself or for the man he had hoped to be.
