Chapter 5: The Mask Falls

352 Words
The gala was finally over, and the guests had dispersed. The silence in the Malhotra Estate was heavy, suffocating. Maya stood in the private study, her hands trembling slightly as she set down a glass of water on the mahogany desk. Aryan was sitting in his high-back chair, his tie loosened, his eyes tired but sharp. "You played your part well tonight, Maya," he said, his voice unusually quiet. "I did what I was told, Mr. Malhotra," she replied, trying to keep her tone professional, though her heart was still hammering against her ribs. Aryan stood up and walked slowly toward her. He stopped only a few inches away. The scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the faint smell of rain—a scent she was beginning to recognize too well. "Tell me," he began, his gaze softening as he looked at her intently, "do you ever wonder why I chose you? Out of all the assistants in this city, why you?" Maya swallowed hard. "Because I needed the job, and you needed someone to manage your chaos." Aryan gave a bitter, dry chuckle. He reached out and touched a stray lock of hair falling over her face. His fingers lingered for a second, a spark of electricity passing between them. "No. It's because you remind me of someone I lost a long time ago. A girl who was just as fearless as you, a girl who saved me from the wreckage of my own life." Maya felt a jolt. The accident. She remembered a rainy night years ago, a boy trapped in a car, her own tears. Could it be? She looked up, her eyes wide with shock. "The accident... were you in the mountains that night?" Aryan froze. His demeanor shifted instantly from vulnerable to guarded. He stepped back, his expression turning cold again. "That is none of your business. Leave now, Maya. And don't ever ask me about the past again." Maya walked out of the room, her mind racing. The pieces were starting to fit together, but the truth seemed more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
