Flynn walked determinedly through the winding paths of No Pack territory, arms full of carefully wrapped packages. The exquisitely crafted dresses inside were the result of days of frenetic work by the Howls' most skilled seamstresses, each piece designed to help Kaida and her companions blend seamlessly with the other guests at the next bonfire.
As he navigated the unfamiliar terrain, Flynn's heightened senses were on high alert. The smells and sounds of the No Pack world were foreign to him, a constant reminder of how far he was from the comforts of the Howling Empire. Just as he began to wonder if he had taken the wrong path, a flash of movement caught his attention.
Two young women ran through the tall grass and twisted bushes, their laughter carried by the wind. Flynn's ears perked up when he heard one of them shout, "Kaida! Wait!"
His heart was beating wildly. Could it be that simple? Without thinking, Flynn stepped aside and followed the girls at a discreet distance. He watched them cross the landscape with the ease of those who had spent their entire lives traversing its meanders.
Finally, the girls stopped under the branches of a towering oak tree. Flynn, realizing he could no longer remain hidden, appeared in the light. The smaller of the two women, a small figure with flowing brown hair, was the first to notice his presence. Her eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"Who are you?" – she asked in a loud and clear voice. “And why are you following us?
Flynn was momentarily struck by the fire in her eyes. Something was endearing in her fierce protectiveness, in the way she placed herself firmly between him and her friend. For a brief, ridiculous moment, Flynn imagined picking her up and spinning her around, just to see how she would react.
A smile formed at the corners of his mouth as he contemplated this thought, which only infuriated the young woman even more.
“Are we a joke to you?” she snapped, clenching her fists at her sides.
The taller girl, who Flynn assumed to be Kaida, placed a reassuring hand on her friend's shoulder. “Ayla,” she whispered, her voice barely heard, “be careful.”
Flynn's keen hearing picked up the silent exchange and he realized he needed to quickly defuse the situation. He cleared his throat and spoke directly to the two of them.
“Which one of you is Kaida?” he asked, keeping his tone as non-threatening as possible. "I'm Valtor's friend."
The effect of his words was immediate and dramatic. Both girls were visibly tense, their eyes widening in a mixture of surprise and fear. Flynn could practically see the thoughts going through their minds: had he been sent to silence them? "Erase all evidence of Valtor's forbidden encounter with a No Pack wolf". This made him let out a loud laugh, leaving the girls more curious and scared.
Sensing the growing panic, Flynn quickly raised his hands, still clutching the piles of clothes. "Wait, please! I'm not here to harm you. I'm a friend of Valtor, his advisor. My name is Flynn and I was sent to bring this to you."
He pointed to the packages in his arms, but the girls remained tense and cautious. Fiery little Ayla spoke again, her voice full of skepticism.
"Clothes? Why would Valtor send us clothes?"
Flynn sighed as he realized he would have to explain more than he had originally intended. "I'm here for the bonfire festival. It's not just any gathering, it's a sacred ceremony for the selection of partners by the Moon Goddess herself."
The gravity of his words seemed to slowly set in. Kaida and Ayla exchanged worried glances, the full implications of what they were potentially discovering clear.
“A partner selection ceremony? Kaida repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. "But we are no pack wolves. We absolutely cannot…"
Flynn nodded in understanding. "I know it's a lot to take in. That's why we had to make sure you had the right clothes. These clothes will help you blend in with the other guests. No one can tell you're from the No Pack territory.”
Ayla, ever protective, took a step forward again. "What if we decide not to go? If Valtor doesn't like the way Kaida looks in her clothes, then that's his problem, right?"
Flynn couldn't help but admire this fiery lady, even as he tried to explain the sensitivity of the situation. It's not about how you look. It's about keeping you safe and keeping the peace between our worlds. If anyone finds out that the wolves of the No Pack have been invited to this sacred ceremony…….”
He let the implication hang, watching as understanding dawned on their faces. The possible consequences of their presence, or even just knowing of their invitation, could be catastrophic for both the Howls Empire and the No Pack.
After a moment of tense silence, Ayla spoke again, her voice calmer but no less determined. "We need time to think about it. This is not a decision we can take lightly."
Kaida nodded. "Can you give us some time? Maybe... a week? Then we'll tell you our decision."
Flynn hesitated, knowing that time was of the essence, but also recognizing the enormity of what he was asking of these young women. Finally, he nodded. "A week, then. But please understand the importance of discretion in this matter. No one can know about the invitation or these clothes."
He carefully handed over the packages and watched Kaida and Ayla accept them with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. As he turned to leave, Flynn found himself looking at Ayla once more. There was something in her gaze – a mixture of fierce protection and hidden vulnerability – that awakened something deep within him.
Freeing himself from this unexpected feeling, Flynn began the long journey back to the Howling Empire. As he walked, his mind wrestled with the possible consequences of this encounter. Will Kaida and her friends attend the ceremony? And if they did, what unintended consequences might their presence bring?
One thing was certain: the upcoming bonfire party was going to be far more complicated and potentially explosive than anyone could have predicted. As advisor to the future Alpha, Flynn knew he would need all of his ingenuity and diplomacy to meet the challenges ahead.
With one last look at No Pack territory, Flynn quickened his pace. He had a lot to report to Jaxton and Valtor, and very little time to prepare for what the Moon Goddess had in store for them all.
