Memories

A dark gray wolf, eyes like emeralds stared into Livy's soul. Saliva and blood dripping from his mouth, death in his eyes. He jumped towards Livy, his teeth bright in the full moon. A scream escaped her mouth, knowing her life was over. "Mama!" Suddenly a white wolf came from the shadows, head-butting the gray wolf away from Livy. Its head slammed into the gray wolf's shoulder, successfully pushing him away from Livy. The gray wolf rolled and snarled as he got his feet back underneath him. The white wolf snarled back unafraid and ready to fight to the death. Livy watched in horror as the gray wolf jumped aiming for the white wolf's neck. A quick swipe of her paw and the white wolf smacked him away. Taking the opportunity the white wolf advanced and snapped at the gray wolf's front leg. The bite was deep and a whimper came from the gray wolf. Not willing to give up he bit the back of the white wolf's neck. Red tainted her perfect white fur as she let go of his paw and shook him off roughly. Livy pushed herself back as far as she could into the bush as the gray wolf rolled towards her. Feeling helpless and knowing her fate would be decided by whoever won. She felt like she was dreaming. She'd never seen wolves fight so viciously before. The gray wolf made eye contact with her and instead of returning to the white wolf, snarled at her and snapped his jaws, coming close to Livy's leg. She tried to make herself smaller but her back was up against something and she couldn't move farther away. The white wolf grabbed the gray wolf by his rear paw and dragged him away from Livy. He swiped his paw at Livy, trying desperately to get her. A crazed look in his eyes. He turned his attention back to the she-wolf and kicked with his free back paw, hitting her in her bottom jaw. The she-wolf held on and shook her head, as blood flew from the wound. The gray wolf curled and scratched the wolf across the face. When she let go, he snapped with his teeth, latching onto her ear. The white wolf let out a howl, full of agony. Her fur lit up with a purple haze. It seemed to reach out from the gray wolf whose eyes widened in surprise. As the purple smoke hit the gray wolf, it seemed to wrap around him. Suddenly he was on the ground writhing in pain, pawing and scratching at himself, as if to get the purple off of him. His howl was full of fear and then the purple smoke went down his throat as if he breathed it in. His howl was cut short and he stopped moving altogether. Livy gasped in horror. The haze went away and the white wolf stood over the gray wolf and howled at the moon in victory. Looking satisfied with herself, she made eye contact with Livy. As she stared at the girl, the she-wolf let her tongue hang out of her mouth, like a puppy bringing home a treat. She took a step towards Livy. "Please don't hurt me." Livy's words were barely a whisper. Livy was shocked to see the wolf take a step back, as if wounded by her words. "Thank you for saving me." The white wolf sat and bowed her head as if to say your welcome. Livy moved forward, slowly and cautiously. She felt drawn to the she-wolf and couldn't figure out why. Like a string pulling her to the wolf. As she looked into the wolf's eyes, a warmth spread in her middle, despite the chill in the air. Once again seeing the blood on the beautiful white fur, Livy felt the need to help the wolf. She ripped the hem of her dress to make a bandage and approached the wolf. To Livy's surprise, the she-wolf lay down as if she knew Livy's intent. Livy wrapped where she could and tried to clean the rest but with muddy hands and no water, she struggled. The white wolf nuzzled her nose into Livy, making her feel a little better about her efforts. Livy scratched behind the she-wolf's undamaged ear. "Thank you" A voice like bells sounded in Livy's head and she knew the wolf had linked with her. Other than her mother and father, she had never linked with a wolf and felt such companionship. A warm spot filled her middle as she realized, this was her inner wolf. Livy's eyes opened as the dream faded. It was the first time her dream had had a happy ending. The warmth in her dream was still with her. She could feel Amethyst purring inside her as if she had dreamed the same happy dream. Feeling grateful she had woken in a happy mood and not afraid, she had forgotten where she was. As she looked around, she quickly remembered, real life had become a nightmare. The scent of her mate was faint, lingering in the room as if he had been here recently. Walls of stone surrounded her. Someone had moved her to a cell. A chain was on her ankle and it attached to the wall behind her. She moved toward the bars, a door she hoped was unlocked. A silly thought, since she was chained to the wall. As she wrapped her hands around the bars, a shock ran through her, like lightning had struck her. She hissed and quickly let go of the bars. Amethyst was awake and howled inside her head, realizing they were trapped. The bars had been enchanted so she couldn't break them. What kind of wolf do they think I am? Livy wondered. Breaking solid steel bars would be beyond her ability, though maybe Amethyst was stronger than she knew. She flinched thinking she had hurt Amethyst's feelings. Livy knew she was strong and hadn't met many wolves with that kind of power. Alpha power ran through Amethyst. She didn't have to bow to Alpha's so she must be as strong or stronger than Alpha Roman. Female Alphas were rare and Livy still hadn't come to grips with Amethyst's power yet. Looking around the cell, Livy noticed a window. Maybe she could get up there and see where they were, though she doubted she'd know where that was anyway. Using the uneven stones she climbed the wall. The chain gripped her ankle before she could get herself on the ledge. But she got just high enough that her nose was over the edge, so she could see. A vast mountain range, fogging with morning dew. The smell of firs, pines, a prairie grass filled her nose. A hint of pollen was in the air as if flowers were hidden from her sight. Livy breathed in as deeply as she could, the fresh air giving her a calm feeling. As if a ghost, the smell of lilacs and honey hit her nose. It felt familiar, like a memory she couldn't quite grasp. Familiar but from where? Agatha's home certainly didn't smell that way. She sniffed again, hoping to catch the scent again but it didn't return. Just her imagination, Livy guessed. Amethyst seemed to be enjoying the sight and smell as well. She seemed almost joyful, as she peeked through with Livy. That warm feeling from Livy's dream bubbled up and she giggled. An unexpected sound for the situation they were in. Livy was sure she'd lost her mind. How could she possibly giggle in such circumstances? Amethyst's feelings were just as happy though as they hung off the wall, staring out of the cell. Crazy or not, Livy chose to enjoy the moment of peace. "We're home," Amethyst spoke for the first time that day. Like a slap in the face, Livy was shocked at the words. Yet somehow she knew they were true. "We're home," Livy repeated.
