I half expected to be taken back to my cell once Damien's little show was over. I needed to find out what this was all about. He definitely was not the Lycan king every female here believed he was but I wouldn't say anything. All of us were trapped here and would likely not make it out.
"We will." Amethyst responded to my thoughts. I didn't know if she was right but her confidence certainly built mine up. I watched the other girls, staying towards the back of the group. Amethyst insisted on keeping our aura down so they wouldn't recognize us as an alpha. I knew for sure now she was an alpha but she was still hiding secrets from me. She had a power I didn't recognize and wanted to keep it a secret. Despite not knowing I felt I could trust her, as she had kept me safe for years.
I thought about Agatha and wondered if she was ok. Knowing she couldn't stay with the pack felt like my fault and I didn't know where she would go. She said she didn't have a home anymore. It had been destroyed years ago along with her family. Her husband's pack was her only home and now she didn't even have that. As I was deep in thought I was led to a room. They didn't say anything just ushered each of us into a room. Most girls were sent in with two or three other girls. I was put in a room with one other girl. Her Aura was a low ranking Alpha. She had barely made the cut I'm sure. Maybe the only alpha female of her pack. She kept her head down in a timid fashion, leading me to believe she was also not confident in her abilities.
"Hey, my name's Livy " I introduced myself.
"Oh, hi, I'm Amber." She sounded hesitant as she looked at me curiously. "You're the first one to talk to me. They didn't even explain why I was sent here."
Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked back down. Fidgeting with her dress nervously. I felt bad for her. She couldn't be much older than 16. I felt bad as she probably hadn't even met her wolf yet.
"They didn't tell you anything?" Poor girl just shook her head instead of answering. I didn't really know what to say to that. I wasn't going to tell her how I got here. That wouldn't help her fears at all.
"Where are you from?"
"I came from Valence. Our pack is small but strong. My three older brothers said it would be good for me to represent our family."
"I couldn't imagine having three brothers." I replied trying to lighten her mood. Apparently it worked because she spent the next half hour describing how annoying and loving they could be. I let her talk while I put things where I wanted them to be. Amber seemed to notice she was the only one talking because she got quiet all of a sudden.
"Do you have any family?" I'm not sure why her question surprised me. I suppose because being in a pack everyone already knew my story.
"I have my Agatha. She's not my mom but she took me in and helped raise me just outside her husband's pack. She was a human but mated with her husband and when he passed they allowed her to continue living there." I wondered if she was ok now. I didn't know if they would let her stay as long as I wasn't there. We always stayed a distance away from the village so maybe they would let her keep her home if she stay away from the pack. That made me worry even more. Who would protect her? She's getting older and being human doesn't have the strength to fight off most things that would attack.
"...Livy?" Amber's voice broke through my thoughts. "Are you ok?"
"Yea, I was just thinking about her. She's alone now that I am here and I miss her." I couldn't tell her what I was really thinking but it wasn't a lie exactly. I do miss her. Agatha was all I had for the longest time. Now I've been dragged her by my mate of all people to fight other women over him. A growl came out of me. Amethyst was stewing over the whole thing. Our mate wronged us and now we are suppose to battle for him. Let them have him. We shouldn't have to fight for his attention, much less our rightful place at his side. I don't think I want to be there anyway. Amethyst huffed at that and went quiet. I know we are both confused and hurt and angry. I looked at Amber who was staring at me like I had lost my mind. Great my one chance at a friend and now she thinks I'm crazy.
"Sorry, my wolf and I just met recently and she thinks we should leave and protect her."
"Oh, I suppose that's understandable. I've never met a human before. I didn't know they could mate with our kind."
"It's rare. They met while he was traveling. She said he was terrifying at first but the bond was so strong she thought fairytales were real." I let out a small laugh remembering how she told the story.
Amber and I settled in. We discussed our homes and our packs and friends in school. We discussed our age and subjects we liked and didn't like. Somehow we began discussing boys and who was cute and who the showoffs were. It seemed like hours passed as we laugh and joked and finally started feeling comfortable.
As soon as the feeling began it quickly left. A swift knock at the door and we were both on edge again. A female came in, she must have been a servant. Her clothes were modest.
"My lady," She bowed to me and then repeated to Amber. "His majesty is holding a dinner for all the contestants. He would greatly appreciate if you joined and wore your finest."
"Of course he does" I scoffed. The servant looked shocked and let out a small gasp.
"My lady?" She asked as though she hasn't heard me.
"Let him know we'll be right down." I replied. She bowed her head and backed out of the room. Amber stood staring at me with her mouth slightly open in surprise.
"As if all the girls here aren't going to wear their finest when having dinner with a king... please." I stated and stomped to my wardrobe. I purposely picked the most simple and common dress I could find. No corset, no jewels, nothing that screamed "look-at-me". An off the shoulder black dress. I tied my hair into a braid that came over my shoulder and down the front of the dress. A touch of smoke on my eyes and I was ready to go.
Amber, on the other hand, dress liked a princess. A champagne gold dress that sparkled with every move she made. It was elegant and flowy. Her ginger colored hair stood out and her green eyes seemed to brighten.
"Well, you are definitely going to be noticed tonight" I said. Amber instantly blushed looking innocently adorable. Amethyst growled in my head but I reminded her we are not here to fight for his attention. He's a prick and he deserve what ever happens to him. He stole my home, my parents, my life, and is standing there like he owns the place. The words felt like ash in my mouth. The bond pulsed with need and I did everything I could to push it down and let the anger rise. Best to be angry and aware of our situation than to let our guard down and be betrayed once again.
