Chapter 1

The uproar of excited voices jolted me awake. I blinked my eyes open to see my father and younger brother sing happy birthday to my sister. Right! today was the day I dreaded since being born. 29th October 2024, less than twenty for hours before I turn 21, along with Gena, my twin sister. Not only that, but it was also the Alpha's son very blessed birthday and it just turns out that today is a full moon. How fantastic, not! The reason turning 21 was so special, especially for an Alpha was because it was the age that not only does your wolf reveal your fated mate, the Alpha's son also takes on the Alpha title. A mate for a werewolf is like a soulmate for humans, but more intense because we can't live without them. And the only way to know who your mate is, is by three things. 1. Scent 2. Touch & the most important 3. Mink link Every werewolf has a unique scent that identifies them, and nobody knows that scent except for your fated mate. It draws them in, calls them to you like a moth to a flame. You become blind to anything and everything else around you and the only important smell is your fated mate's scent. Then there's touch. That one is pretty explanatory, once you touch your mate for the first time. Electrical sparks travel throughout your hand shocking your heart into beating too fast. At least that's how my father explained it. And the mind link, well that only happens when you mate for the first time and you bond your souls through a wolf bite, which is called a wolf mark. And those are the only things that identify your fated mate. I sat up just as the happy birthday song ended and they all hooray-ed. “Thank you guys so much” Said Gina almost teary eyed as they all shared a group hug. “Well isn't that wonderful” Was my comment as I got up. Gina poked her head from underneath father's armpit and smiled at me. “Happy birthday Xena! Come join in” She said and I just shook my head not wanting to disrupt their joyous moment. Her smile fell and I just rolled my eyes just as father looked back at me and Xavier untangled himself from the hug and ran at me hugging my waist. “Happy 21st birthday Xena!” He said looking up at me with a wide toothy smile. I smiled back and patted his head. “Thanks lil guy” Xavier was just five years old. His birth was a surprise to both my parents. They didn't expect to get pregnant after having us because my mother was human and could only give birth once. They thought it was a blessing from the moon goddess, but that thought soon evaporated once my mother died after giving birth to Xavier. My father was never the same after that, he buried himself in pack work even when Alpha Adryan begged him to take a few weeks off to mourn his mate. Being the beta of the pack, we all needed him at his best and losing his mate in such a manner, tore him apart that he just chose to ignore his pain and focus on work. And less on his family. Which meant it was up to us to raise Xavier alone. Well Gena left all the work to me, while she partied, sneaked out and did what every teen would do at her age. We were only sixteen at the time. And she just started dating the Alpha's son, Ayden and I had to take responsibility for everything and I had no problem doing that. “Dad said I get to go to your party with Alpha Ayden!” He excitedly exclaimed and I raised my eyebrows at my father. “He did huh, that's nice of him” The thing about our shared birthday with the Alpha's son is we never got to celebrate it together. While I blew out a candle in a cupcake every year from sixteen. Gena and the rest of the pack had a celebratory barbecue in honor of the lovely couple. And this year being our 21st birthday, we aka I get to attend the birthday/Alpha ceremony. And I wasn't even remotely interested in going. My father blankly looked at me while Gena looked down at her duvet cover and I shook my head looking back down at Xavier. “Well you want to help me make a birthday breakfast buddy?” He enthusiastically nodded. “Race you to the kitchen” He didn't even wait for me and bolted out the door. Gena looked at me with a small smile and I just turned and left following Xavier to the kitchen. I don't hate my dad and sister for practically abandoning me to raise Xavier all by myself. I just wish they did a better job at showing me they cared. Getting to the kitchen, Xavier was already draghing the barstool to climb on. “Alright buddy, you ready?” He omce again nodded with a gigantic smile on his face. He tried climbing on the stool to get to the kitchen table and failed. I picked him up and sat him on top of the table and I opened the cupboard getting out ingredients for blueberry pancakes. We made a mess in the kicthen, but by the end of it all we had eight crooked and slightly burnt blueberry pancakes set out at the table. Footsteps sounded and seconds later, Gena emerged in the kitchen wearing her crop top and short shorts. “Gena look, pancakes!” Xavier showed her the pancakes in the plate and Gena smiled ruffling his curly hair. Out of us three, Xavier was the one who looked more like my mother than any of us. She too her navy blue eyes, her pinched nose and round face, even her curly hair. While Gena and I took our dad's green eyes, sharp nose, thin lips and soft straight hair. “They look scrumptious love, can I have one?” She said already reaching for one pancake and I slapped her hand away. “Make your own” I said taking the plate and dishing up two for Xavier with lots of syrup. “Oh cmon Xena, it's my birthday. Don't I deserve just one pancake?” She pouted like I'd melt at it. I just simply gave her an emotionless expression. “Our birthday, and no” Xavier was looking between us in confusion and I sat him down giving him his plate. “Go eat in the living room, I'll come turn in Bugs Bunny for you” He nodded and left and I took the plate of pancakes placing it inside the microwave. “Xena? Why do you hate me?” The question had me momentarily pause tidying up and look at her. “You think I hate you?” “I know you hate me, your actions towards me say you do” I wanted to laugh, truly. But I decided to just scoff instead. “Gena, I don't hate you, I never did. I just hate your actions” She folded her arms while I stood leaning against the sink, with my own arms folded. “What do you mean?” “You know what I mean” With that I walked out the kitchen and into the living room. Xavier was seated on the floor munching on his pancakes. I turned on the television and switched to cartoon network for Bugs Bunny and we both watched it. He with concentration and me with alot running through my mind. Gena came and sat right next to me and I glanced at her and shook my head. She was texting on her phone and it wasn't until a knock sounded at the door that she jumped off the sofa to go open it. I heard screaming of excitement then multiple voices singing Happy birthday. My gosh! When will this nightmare end?
