Chapter 3: The Moon Stone's Judgment The Moon Stone's Judgment The silver beam pierced the heavens like a spear forged from moonlight. No one moved. No one dared to breathe. The Sacred Clearing had become so silent that even the rustling leaves seemed afraid to disturb the moment. The brilliant pillar stretched endlessly into the night sky, disappearing beyond the clouds. Its light bathed every wolf in the Bloodfang Pack. Yet somehow... It felt as though it was searching for only one person. Me. A cold shiver raced down my spine. I stared at the impossible sight, unable to understand what I had done. "I..." The words caught in my throat. "I didn't..." Before I could finish, the beam suddenly vanished. Darkness rushed back across the clearing. The only light left was the full moon hanging peacefully above us, as though nothing extraordinary had happened. For several long seconds... No one spoke. Then chaos erupted. "The Moon Stone broke!" "I saw it c***k!" "What in the Goddess's name was that?" "Were we attacked?" Parents hurried to gather their frightened children while warriors instinctively surrounded the ceremonial grounds. The joyful celebration from moments earlier had completely disappeared. Fear had replaced it. Raw. Uncertain. Contagious. The Head Elder lifted both hands. "Silence!" His normally calm voice cracked with unusual urgency. The crowd quieted, though frightened whispers continued to ripple through the gathering. The Elder slowly approached the Moon Stone. His hands trembled as he examined its flawless white surface. There wasn't a single c***k. Not one. He circled the ancient relic twice before pressing a wrinkled hand against it. Nothing. The glowing fracture... Gone. The silver light... Gone. It was as though none of it had ever happened. His breathing became uneven. "No..." Another Elder hurried over. "What do you see?" "It healed." The words were barely audible. "It... healed itself." A murmur swept through the circle of Elders. One of them shook his head. "Impossible." "The Moon Stone has never been damaged." "Exactly." Alpha Magnus descended from the platform, his heavy boots echoing across the stone path. His commanding presence immediately silenced everyone nearby. "What happened?" No Elder answered immediately. Instead, they exchanged uncertain glances. Finally, the Head Elder bowed. "My Alpha..." "...we do not know." Those four words sent a ripple of unease through the clearing. The Elders were the keepers of Bloodfang history. If they didn't know... Who did? Alpha Magnus turned toward me. His amber eyes were sharp. Cold. Calculating. "Girl." My heartbeat quickened. "Step forward." Every instinct told me to run. Instead... I obeyed. The crowd parted once again. This time... There were no mocking smiles. Only wary eyes. Some wolves looked frightened. Others looked suspicious. As if I had suddenly become a stranger in my own home. I stopped several feet before the Alpha and lowered my head respectfully. "You summoned me, Alpha." His gaze never left my face. "What did you do?" "I..." "I don't know." His expression hardened. "You expect me to believe that?" "It's the truth." "I only touched the Moon Stone." "You saw the beam." "Yes." "What caused it?" "I don't know." His jaw tightened. For the first time in years... I saw uncertainty in Alpha's eyes. It disappeared almost instantly. Before he could question me further... A deep voice interrupted. "She's telling the truth." The crowd turned. Kael stepped forward. He stood beside his father, his expression calm despite the unrest surrounding us. "I watched her from the moment she approached the Moon Stone." He looked at me briefly before facing Alpha Magnus again. "She never attempted anything unusual." "You defend her?" Rowan blurted from somewhere within the crowd. Kael's icy gaze shifted toward him. "Do you have evidence she caused this?" Rowan opened his mouth. Nothing came out. "No." "Then keep your accusations to yourself." Rowan immediately lowered his head. "My apologies." I blinked. Kael had defended me. Again. Not warmly. Not kindly. Simply... Fairly. I didn't know what to make of it. The Head Elder suddenly cleared his throat. "My Alpha." Magnus turned. "I request permission to end tonight's ceremony." The Alpha frowned. "There are no participants remaining." "There is another reason." The Elder hesitated. His voice dropped low enough that only those closest could hear. "The Moon Stone should be examined before sunrise." Magnus studied him for a long moment. Then he nodded once. "So be it." The Elder turned to face the gathered pack. "The Moon Ceremony has concluded." "You are all dismissed." No cheers followed. No celebration. Families quietly gathered their belongings and hurried home, whispering nervously among themselves. The festival ended beneath a cloud of fear. Within minutes... The Sacred Clearing was nearly empty. I turned to leave as well. "Selene." I stopped. It was Mara. She hurried toward me, her face pale. "Come." "What's wrong?" "I don't know." She glanced over her shoulder. "But something tells me..." Her fingers tightened around my hand. "...your life changed tonight." I looked back one last time. The Elders stood around the Moon Stone in a tight circle. They weren't speaking. They were listening. As though waiting... For the stone to do something again. High above them... Hidden behind drifting clouds... The full moon glowed brighter than before. And somewhere deep within the forest surrounding Bloodfang Pack... Two golden eyes slowly opened. Watching. Waiting. Smiling. The Sacred Clearing remained unnaturally silent long after the silver beam vanished. The fear that had gripped the crowd refused to loosen its hold. No one celebrated. No one laughed. Even the children who had been running through the clearing only moments ago now clung tightly to their parents, their wide eyes fixed on the Moon Stone as though expecting it to awaken again. Alpha Magnus slowly turned away from the ancient relic. His sharp amber eyes swept across the gathered wolves, reading the unease written plainly on every face. "This gathering is over," he declared, his voice carrying effortlessly through the clearing. "Return to your homes." The command should have ended the night's events. Instead, no one moved. They waited. They whispered. Every conversation eventually circled back to the same person. Selene. "...She touched it." "I've lived for sixty winters." "I've never seen anything like that." "What if she's cursed?" "What if she's dangerous?" The words drifted through the air like poison. Selene lowered her gaze, pretending she couldn't hear them. She had spent most of her life pretending. It was easier that way. If she acted as though the whispers didn't hurt... Perhaps one day they really wouldn't. A firm voice cut through the murmurs. "Silence." The Head Elder stepped forward once more, leaning heavily on his carved ashwood staff. "The Alpha has spoken." Reluctantly, the wolves began leaving the Sacred Clearing. Some glanced back over their shoulders. Others openly stared at Selene as they walked past, as though expecting something else to happen the moment they looked away. Within minutes, only a handful of people remained. Alpha Magnus. Kael. The Circle of Elders. Several elite warriors. And Selene. The Head Elder let out a weary sigh. "Close the gates." At once, two warriors pulled the heavy wooden barriers across the entrance to the Sacred Clearing. A loud thud echoed through the night. Selene's stomach tightened. Why were they locking the gates? She instinctively took a small step backward. A warrior noticed immediately. "Stay where you are." His voice wasn't cruel. It was cautious. As though she were an unfamiliar animal that might bolt at any moment. "I wasn't leaving," Selene replied quietly. Alpha Magnus folded his arms across his broad chest. "No." "You were thinking about it." She couldn't deny that. "I... didn't know if I was supposed to stay." "You are." The simple answer settled heavily over the clearing. The Alpha slowly approached her. Though he wasn't an exceptionally tall man, his presence seemed to fill every corner of the sacred grounds. Years of leading Bloodfang Pack had carved authority into every movement he made. He stopped only a few feet away. "Look at me." Selene obeyed. His piercing amber eyes searched hers carefully, studying every flicker of emotion that crossed her face. Fear. Confusion. Exhaustion. He saw them all. But he did not see guilt. That unsettled him more than he cared to admit. "What happened when you touched the Moon Stone?" Selene hesitated. "I... don't know." "Think carefully before you answer." "I am." His expression hardened. "The Moon Stone has never reacted the way it did tonight." "I know." "It responded to you." "I don't know why." "Did you feel anything?" She opened her mouth. Then closed it again. The silver lake flashed across her mind. The endless moon. The mysterious woman. My child... Her heart skipped painfully. Should she tell them? Would they believe her? Or would they think she'd finally lost her mind? Alpha Magnus noticed her hesitation immediately. "You remembered something." Selene looked up. "I..." "Speak." "I thought I heard someone." Several Elders exchanged quick glances. "A voice?" She nodded slowly. "It wasn't... normal." "What did it say?" Selene frowned, trying to recall every word. "It called me..." Her voice softened. "...its child." Silence swallowed the clearing. One Elder gripped his staff, so tightly his knuckles turned white. Another looked away entirely. The Head Elder remained perfectly still. Too still. Alpha Magnus noticed. "Elder Corvin." The old man blinked. "My Alpha?" "You recognize those words." The Elder lowered his gaze. "I recognize many things." "Answer the question." Corvin hesitated. "The records contain ancient stories." "Stories?" "Legends from before Bloodfang Pack was founded." Alpha Magnus narrowed his eyes. "And?" "They are only myths." "I did not ask whether they were myths." "I asked if you recognize what the girl described." Corvin slowly exhaled. "...Yes." Every warrior present stiffened. Kael's attention shifted immediately toward the old Elder. "You've heard of this before?" Corvin's tired eyes met his. "I have." "Where?" "In books no one has opened for decades." Kael frowned. "What do they say?" The Elder looked toward Selene. "They speak of voices heard beneath the full moon." Selene's heartbeat quickened. "But every account ends the same way." She swallowed. "...How?" The Elder's face darkened. "The listener never lived long enough to tell the rest." A chill swept through the clearing. Selene's blood ran cold. "What...?" Corvin quickly shook his head. "They are only stories." "But you believe them." "I believe nothing." "You hesitated." The old man offered no answer. For the first time that night... Kael spoke. "If these are merely stories..." He stepped beside Selene, his voice calm but firm. "...why are the Elders afraid?" No one answered. Not immediately. The question lingered in the cool night air. Finally, another Elder spoke. "Because stories begin somewhere." Those five words settled over everyone like a storm cloud. Alpha Magnus slowly turned toward the Circle of Elders. "I want every historical record concerning the Moon Stone brought to my study before sunrise." "My Alpha—" "That was not a request." Corvin bowed deeply. "As you command." Magnus looked back at Selene. "You will remain inside the Alpha Manor until this matter is understood." Selene's eyes widened. "...Remain?" "You are not a prisoner." He paused. "But until we know what happened tonight..." "...you will not leave the manor grounds without permission." A knot formed in Selene's stomach. She had lived within the manor walls for years. Yet somehow... Those words made it feel like a cage. She glanced toward Mara, who stood silently near the edge of the clearing. The older woman's face was filled with worry. Selene forced herself to smile. A small one. Just enough to tell Mara she was all right. Even though... She wasn't sure that was true anymore. Far above them, hidden behind drifting clouds... The full moon shone brighter than ever. And deep within the ancient forest beyond Bloodfang territory... Something unseen stirred from a centuries-long sleep. It had felt the Moon Stone awaken. And for the first time in eighteen years... It knew exactly where to look.
