Chapter 6: Echoes Beneath the Moon
The following morning arrived beneath a blanket of gray clouds.
Unlike the bright sunrise of the previous day, the sky now seemed unusually heavy, casting the Alpha Manor in muted shades of silver and stone.
A cool breeze drifted through the open corridors, carrying with it the scent of rain.
Selene stood by her window, watching the trees sway gently beyond the manor walls.
She had barely slept.
Whenever she closed her eyes, fragments of the silver lake returned.
The woman's voice.
The endless moonlight.
The unfinished warning.
"You must not awaken—"
Each memory vanished before she could grasp its meaning.
A soft knock sounded against her door.
Before she could answer, Mara stepped inside carrying a neatly folded bundle of linens.
"You've been awake for a while."
Selene offered a small smile.
"I couldn't sleep."
"I figured."
Mara placed the linens onto the table before turning toward her.
"The Alpha has relaxed your restrictions."
Selene blinked.
"I can leave my room?"
"You can move around the manor grounds."
Mara paused.
"But not beyond the main gates."
The words carried both relief and disappointment.
At least she wasn't confined to her room anymore.
Yet the invisible walls around her remained.
"They're still watching me."
Mara sighed softly.
"People fear what they don't understand."
Selene looked toward the window once more.
"I wish they would ask questions instead of making assumptions."
"So do I."
After helping Mara carry fresh linens to several rooms throughout the manor, Selene found herself wandering through the eastern courtyard.
The training grounds lay just beyond a stone archway.
Normally, she avoided passing through that area.
It belonged to the warriors.
To people stronger than her.
Today...
She stopped without realizing it.
The sharp clang of steel echoed through the morning air.
Warriors sparred across the open field, their movements swift and disciplined.
Some practiced swordsmanship.
Others shifted partially into their wolf forms during combat.
Selene watched quietly from beneath the archway.
She had always admired their strength.
Not because she wished to fight.
But because she had never possessed such confidence herself.
"You're hiding."
The familiar voice startled her.
She turned.
Kael stood a few steps away, dressed in dark training clothes, a wooden practice sword resting across one shoulder.
"I wasn't hiding."
His brow lifted slightly.
"No?"
"I just didn't want to interrupt."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"The warriors are too focused on themselves to notice anyone else."
Selene glanced back toward the training field.
"I've never understood how they make it look so effortless."
"It isn't."
She looked at him.
"They train every day."
"So do I."
"But you're already strong."
Kael let out a quiet breath.
"Strength isn't something you finish earning."
Selene lowered her gaze.
"I've never been strong."
Kael looked at her for a long moment.
"You've survived eighteen years believing you didn't matter."
She looked up, surprised.
"That takes more strength than most warriors will ever understand."
A faint breeze swept through the training grounds.
Somewhere nearby, another sword struck against steel.
Selene couldn't remember the last time anyone had called her strong.
Not because of her abilities.
Not because of her future.
Simply...
Because of who she was.
She found herself smiling before she even realized it.
It was small.
But genuine.
His words lingered in her mind.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The sounds of training filled the silence between them.
Finally, Kael looked toward the distant forest beyond the walls.
"I searched the archives again this morning."
Selene's expression grew serious.
"Did you find anything?"
He hesitated.
"Only more missing pages."
Her heart sank.
"So someone really erased the past."
"It appears that way."
She lowered her eyes.
"Why would anyone hide history?"
Kael answered without looking at her.
"Because the truth threatens someone."
Those words settled heavily between them.
Before Selene could respond, an older warrior approached, wiping sweat from his brow.
"Future Alpha."
Kael nodded.
"Garrick."
The veteran warrior glanced briefly toward Selene.
His expression remained polite.
But cautious.
"The council meeting begins shortly."
"I know."
As Garrick walked away, Selene quietly stepped back.
"I should go."
"You don't have to."
She smiled faintly.
"I think I do."
Kael watched as she disappeared beneath the stone corridor.
Something about the way the other warriors looked at her unsettled him.
Not hatred.
Not yet.
But fear had already begun planting dangerous seeds.
Selene wandered toward the gardens once again.
The flowers seemed brighter today.
Their fragrance richer.
Even the gentle hum of bees sounded unusually clear.
She knelt beside a rosebush, reaching toward a single unopened bud.
Just before her fingers touched it...
She stopped.
A strange feeling washed over her.
Not fear.
Recognition.
As though something deep within her knew the flower before she had ever seen it.
Without thinking, she rested her fingertips lightly against one emerald-green leaf.
Warmth spread through her hand.
The leaf shimmered.
Not silver this time...
But pale moonlight white.
The tiny bud slowly unfolded before her eyes.
Petal by petal.
Blooming in only a matter of seconds.
Selene gasped and pulled her hand away.
The flower remained fully opened.
Perfect.
Untouched.
"No..."
She whispered.
"This isn't possible."
She looked around nervously.
The garden remained still.
Butterflies drifted lazily from flower to flower.
Nothing seemed different.
Yet she couldn't ignore the strange warmth lingering in her fingertips.
She reached toward another blossom.
Then stopped herself.
"No..."
She whispered.
"If this is real..."
"...what am I becoming?"
The question lingered in the quiet garden.
Only the wind answered.
"You shouldn't be afraid."
The voice came from behind her.
Selene spun around.
No one stood there.
Only the empty garden.
The whisper had been soft.
Gentle.
Almost familiar.
The breeze stirred the newly bloomed flower.
Far beyond Bloodfang Pack...
Upon a rocky cliff overlooking endless forests...
The silver wolf slowly opened his golden eyes.
For the first time in centuries...
He smiled.
"The blessing has begun to awaken."
His deep voice disappeared into the wind.
And somewhere, carried across mountains and ancient woods...
The Moon itself seemed to answer.
The council chamber was unusually quiet.
Heavy stone walls surrounded the circular room, their surfaces carved with the crests of every Alpha who had ruled the Bloodfang Pack. A long oak table stood at the center, illuminated by flickering lanterns despite the daylight outside.
Alpha Magnus sat at the head of the table.
Around him were the Elders, each wearing solemn expressions.
Kael stood beside the window, his arms folded across his chest.
Elder Corvin carefully placed another weathered scroll onto the table.
"We searched every remaining archive."
"And?" Magnus asked.
Corvin hesitated.
"There is no record of what happened during the Moon Ceremony."
Magnus frowned.
"What do you mean, no record?"
"The pages have been removed."
Another Elder leaned forward.
"Could they have simply deteriorated with age?"
Corvin slowly shook his head.
"No."
"The edges are clean."
"They were cut."
Silence settled over the chamber.
Kael finally spoke.
"Someone erased our history."
One of the older Elders scoffed.
"To what end?"
Kael met his gaze.
"If no one remembers the truth..."
"...then no one questions the lies."
Several Elders exchanged uneasy glances.
Magnus rested both hands on the table.
"We will continue the investigation."
"No one outside this room is to learn of the missing records."
Another Elder cleared his throat.
"And the girl?"
The chamber fell silent once more.
Magnus slowly looked toward the rain-covered windows.
"We observe."
"We do not provoke."
"What if she truly is the one described in the missing records?"
No one answered.
Not because they didn't have opinions...
But because none of them wanted to speak the possibility aloud.
The council nodded.
But unease lingered in every face.
Outside...
Dark clouds gathered above Bloodfang Pack.
The first drops of rain began falling gently across the gardens.
Selene hurried beneath the shelter of a stone walkway, laughing quietly as the cool breeze carried the scent of wet earth through the manor grounds.
Rain had always been her favorite.
The manor became peaceful whenever storms arrived.
Most servants rushed indoors.
The gardens belonged only to the flowers.
She stepped toward the edge of the courtyard, extending one hand into the rain.
Tiny droplets landed across her fingertips.
Cool.
Refreshing.
Then...
A single drop lingered upon her skin.
Instead of sliding away...
It shimmered.
A faint silver glow spread through the droplet before disappearing.
Selene stared.
Her heartbeat quickened.
Again...
Just for an instant...
Something impossible had happened.
"You saw it too."
The familiar voice startled her.
She turned.
Kael stood beneath the stone archway, watching the rain.
"I thought I imagined it," Selene admitted quietly.
"You didn't."
She searched his expression.
"You believe me?"
"I believe I've witnessed enough impossible things this week."
Despite everything, Selene smiled.
"So have I."
For a few moments, they stood together in comfortable silence, listening to the steady rhythm of rain striking the courtyard stones.
"I used to hate storms," Kael said unexpectedly.
She looked at him.
"Really?"
"When I was a child."
"Why?"
"My mother died during one."
The words were simple.
Matter-of-fact.
Yet they carried years of quiet grief.
"I'm sorry."
Kael gave a small nod.
"I barely remember her."
Selene hesitated before speaking.
"I don't remember my parents very well either."
Another silence followed.
Not awkward.
Understanding.
For the first time...
Neither of them felt alone.
High above the courtyard...
Hidden among the rooftops...
A pair of cold eyes watched them.
One of the council's younger Elders slowly lowered the enchanted spyglass in his hands.
"So..."
he murmured.
"They've already begun growing close."
He disappeared into the shadows before either of them noticed.
That evening...
The rain finally stopped.
Mist drifted between the towering trees surrounding Bloodfang Pack.
Far beyond the borders...
The silver wolf walked silently through the ancient forest in his human form.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Long silver hair rested against a dark traveling cloak.
His golden eyes reflected the rising moon overhead.
He stopped before the crumbling remains of an ancient stone shrine.
Its pillars had collapsed centuries ago.
Moonlit vines climbed across cracked marble.
At the center stood a broken statue.
A woman with a crescent moon carved upon her forehead.
Time had weathered nearly every feature.
But the silver-haired man knew exactly who she was.
He rested one hand against the cold stone.
"My Lady..."
His voice was barely more than a whisper.
"She has awakened."
A gentle breeze stirred the surrounding trees.
The forest answered with silence.
The silver-haired man closed his eyes.
"For two thousand years..."
Images flashed through his memory.
A moonlit battlefield.
Fallen guardians.
A young woman dressed in silver reaching toward him one final time.
Her smile had held no fear.
Only hope.
"I leave the future..."
"...to you."
The memory vanished like mist beneath the rising moon.
He slowly opened his eyes.
"I have kept my promise."
His gaze remained fixed upon the broken statue.
"This time..."
"...I will not fail her again."
A cold breeze swept through the shrine.
The silver-haired man's expression hardened.
"But others have begun to move."
He slowly turned toward the darkness beyond the shrine.
Someone was there.
Watching.
A pair of crimson eyes gleamed between the trees.
Neither figure spoke.
The air itself seemed to grow heavier.
After several long moments...
The unseen figure smiled.
"So..."
A deep voice echoed through the forest.
"...the Blessed Luna has awakened."
The silver-haired man's hand slowly curled into a fist.
"You should have stayed buried."
The stranger laughed.
A low...
Ancient...
Unsettling laugh.
"History..."
He said quietly,
"...always repeats itself."
The crimson eyes vanished.
The forest fell silent once more.
The silver-haired man remained standing before the ruined shrine.
His gaze lingered on the darkness where the stranger had disappeared.
For the first time in centuries...
Worry flickered across the ancient guardian's face.
Far away...
Inside the Alpha Manor...
Selene suddenly awoke with a sharp gasp.
Her heart pounded against her ribs.
She didn't know what had happened.
Yet every instinct inside her screamed that something had changed.
Outside her window...
The full moon emerged from behind the clouds.
Its silver light bathed the sleeping manor.
Far across the mountains...
The silver wolf lifted his gaze toward the same moon.
For centuries...
He had waited.
For centuries...
He had prayed.
For centuries...
He had stood alone.
Now...
At last...
The Blessed Luna had returned.
He closed his eyes for only a heartbeat.
When they opened again...
There was no hesitation left within them.
Only unwavering resolve.
Far across the mountains...
The wind carried a single whispered promise.
"This time..."
"...I will protect you."
