Chapter 3

She was so kind to me and always has been but, I still wouldn't allow myself to break in front of her. As if sensing my discomfort, she rose from her chair and sighed. "I'm off to bed. Second door on the right at the top of the stairs," she said. All I could do was nod my head. I placed my cup on the table as soon as I heard her bedroom door close and let it all out. I cried and questioned what I did wrong, why her, and everything else a grieving person would ask. I knew mom and i had drifted apart slightly when I told her that I was moving out but, we would still text and call. I would visit whenever I could but, she knew why it wasn't as regular as it was in the beginning. So many times she would ask me to move back home but I brushed it off. I did enjoy living alone but, at what cost? I couldn't afford to go out with friends and that resulted in them cutting me out of the circle. "Real friends wouldn't do that," I huffed when it happened. I was working 2 jobs just to pay rent, run my car, pay the bills and to buy food. I wasn't living my life and was barely surviving. My eyes were sore, my body was cold and numb but I pulled myself up off of th sofa to go to the guest room that Mrs Peters so kindly allowed me to use. On the bed, was a pair of pyjamas and some toiletries. I headed to the shower, removed my freezing, wet clothes and stepped into the warm spray. My body instantly relaxed from the heat and the pressure of the water hitting the taught muscles. I turned off the water, dried myself off and got dressed. Leaving the bedside lamp on, I climbed into bed. I didn't want to be alone and in the dark right now. The warm glow comforted me as I fell into a restless sleep. Images running through my head from the time I received the call from Mrs Peters, to the shadowy figure in the road which caused me to crash into the tree, finding my mom's body and then watching her being taken away by the paramedics "I will see you soon, young one," the shadowy figure said making me jump awake. "Are you alright, Livvie?" Mrs Peters asked, running breathlessly into the room. "Just, just a nightmare," I didn't know how to explain it to her and I doubt that she would believe me anyway. "It's going to be alright. I have called the girls. They will be over at around 4pm." "What time is it now?" "Just after lunchtime. I thought you could do with the sleep after yesterday," she explained. "Thanks, Mrs Peters," I said a I jumped out of bed in search of my phone. "Found it. UGH!" "What is it?" "I didn't call my boss to say that I wasn't coming in." "Oh. Surely they will understand," she said smiling. "I will give you some privacy," she said as she left the room. I looked at my phone, 15 missed calls, 4 voicemails, 4 text messages. 'Lets deal with the texts first,' I thought. The first one was just the standard, where are you? You know the policy, call in. The next message was from my landlord to remind me that my rent is due tomorrow or an option was given to terminate my lease. What a crappy start to the day. I doubt that the voicemails will be an better. "This is a message for Olivia. Please call us as soon as possible regarding your tenancy. If you would like to renew your lease, you would need to advise us by midday tomorrow. Failure to do so will result in your current lease being automatically terminated and an eviction notice issued. This will give you two weeks to vacate th property." Message 2 was the same as the first. "Hi, Olivia. Please can you let us know if you are coming into work today. If not, please can you provide a reason. Thank you." I will respond to that one in a minute, I thought. "Hello, young one," my eyes widen at the sound of his voice. "I am coming to take you home." I quickly ended the call and threw my phone onto the bed. "You look like you've seen a ghost," Mrs Peters said. I hadn't realised that she was till sat on the bed next to me. "How about a nice bit of breakfast?" she asked. "Sounds good. Thank you." My heart was was beating so hard and fast, it felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. I closed my eyes, slowly inhaled, 1,2,3,4,5. Then slowly exhaled, 1,2,3,4,5 before opening my eyes. I picked up my phone with shaking hands and dialled my boss's number. "Hi, Olivia Is everything alright? It's not like you to be late or not turn up." "Hi, Violet. I'm sorry. I'm going to need to take some tim off. My mom passed away," I didn't go into too much detail, there was no need. "Oh I'm sorry to hear that, Liv. I will clear it with HR so that you still get paid." "Thanks Vi." "Take care of yourself. Just shout if you need anything." With that she ended the call. Now onto the next.
