I had barely taken two steps away from the dungeon entrance when a voice behind me made my blood run cold.
"Enjoying a late-night stroll, Jasmine?"
I whirled around, my heart pounding, to see Mason leaning against the wall. His face was hidden in shadows, but I could feel his eyes on me.
"M-Mason," I stammered, trying to keep my voice steady. "I... I was just..."
"Just what?" he asked, his voice deceptively calm.
My mind raced, searching for a plausible excuse. "I couldn't sleep," I blurted out. "The baby was kicking, and I thought a walk might help."
Mason pushed off the wall and took a step towards me. I instinctively backed away.
"Is that so?" he said, his tone making it clear he didn't believe me. "And your walk just happened to take you down to the dungeons?"
