The picnic was going amazing. I had the best time of my life. My talk with Mason was not forced. We flowed into each other effortlessyly. He was a wonderful person with a good heart.
"No way, you mean that's not the craziest thing your dad has ever done?'' Mason laughed.
"Nu uh. He has done so much worse. My sister and I used to laugh about it once.''
Suddenly, I heard a strange whistling sound. My senses were suddenly on high alert, I looked around. An arrow flew over my head and stuck in the ground a few feet away. I gasped, my heart pounding.
"Mason!" I cried.
Mason looked up, his face serious. "Stay down!" he ordered, pulling me to the ground.
Another arrow flew past, missing me head by inches. Why was someone trying to kill me? I felt a rush of fear. Who was shooting at us?
Mason covered me with his body, protecting me. "Stay still," he whispered urgently.
I could hear the shouts of the royal guards in the distance. I didn't know what was happening. All the while, my hand was on my stomach. I feared for the safety of my unborb baby. The guards were advancing fast towards us. Mason kept his head turned on the direction from where the arrows were coming, his body tense.
"Keep your head down.'' Mason said, and I did. Minutes felt like hours as we lay there. I could hear shouting, footsteps like more than one person was running. Finally, the sounds of footsteps approached, and I heard the guards' voices.
"Your Highness, are you alright?" one of the guards called out.
"We're fine," Mason replied.
"Catch..''
I didn't hear anything else, right before there was the sound of someone falling down. At my side, I let out a loud scream at the side of a man with an arrow straight through his eyes to the back of his head. He was dead. What was going on? Why fingers were shaking. Mason was still holding me protectively.
The guards fanned out, moving swiftly. It wasn't long before they spotted a figure in the distance. Unlike what I expected, a woman stood there, a bow in her hand and a quiver of arrows strapped to her back. She looked determined, her lips were tight as she held her arrow, still aiming at us.
"Drop your weapon!" one of the guards commanded.
The woman hesitated, looking back at them.
"We will put you down! Drop your weapon!'' The guard shouted again. She got up, letting her bow fall on the grass. The guards quickly apprehended her and brought her closer to where Mason and I were still lying on the ground. Mason let me go. I felt dizy, my fingers were shaking. I was scared. The woman infront of us was beautiful. She wasn't what I expected in the name of a shooter. Why was she trying to kill me?
"Lydia?'' Mason raised a brow as he stood.
"I gave you a promise, I came to collect on it!'' She muttered, then stared down at me. "You have no idea what you've signed up for.'' She smirked.
"Take her away!'' Mason's command ignited the guards action. Lydia was led away, even though she didn't fight or beg. I was left seating on the blankets, shaken and confused.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?'' Mason came to touch me.
"I'm okay.'' I pulled myself up. He was hovering over me protectively, but all that stuck in my mind was the vague warning I had been given by that woman.
"Who waas she?'' I looked at Mason.
"I don't know.''
"You called her by her name. You know her! Who was she Mason?'' His mind was far. His eyes were fixed on the guards who had now just gotten to the castle, and were escotting her in.
"I have to take care of something darling.'' He said, he smiled, then he started walking away. "Make sure she's safe. And escort her back to the castle.'' He spoke to the guard who was left behind. I, on the other hand, remained utterly confused.
I had a thousand questions, alot of guesses, but none of them, could come close to a possible answer.
