______________
Daniel didn’t know what the hell was going on with him. Some poor human gets turned against her will and all Daniel could think about was throwing her against the wall and claiming her as his mate, which was ridiculous because Daniel didn’t need a mate. He was doing just fine on his own. His wolf, however, had other ideas and kept hijacking his logical thoughts. Especially after what just happened, he needed to get away from Jia very soon.
If he didn’t, then he’s going to do something Jia will regret.
“It’s been a long day,” Daniel broke the silence, trying really hard not to concentrate on the fact that Jia was still shirtless. “How about I lend you some clothes from one of the girls for tomorrow and show you to your room?”
“I have a room?” Jia asked.
“Of course,” Daniel replied. “You’re pack now, Jia. This is your home, too.”
It was probably too much for Jia to take in at once, but Daniel needed to get her to bed or just somewhere Daniel wasn’t tempted to jump her. However, thinking of Jia sprawled out under the bedsheets with sleep-ruffled hair was almost too much to ignore. His inner wolf was yelling at him, ‘bite, mate, mine!’
Jia didn’t reply. Instead, she was following silently behind Daniel to Sarah’s bedroom. Her bedroom, although located on the far side of the hallway, was the closest. Daniel knocked, she opened the door in no time, “What do you want?” but as soon as Sarah saw Jia standing behind him, she smiled, closed the door, and yelled, “Wait outside! I’ll grab something for you, Jia!”
Daniel gave an awkward smile to Jia, and she nodded, looking down. She was a timid person, he thought.
Sarah returned and picked out some shirts and jeans, then handed them to Jia, who took them gratefully.
“Thanks,” she smiled, hands thumbing over the material as she surveyed Sarah’s choice of clothing.
“You’re welcome,” Sarah replied and moved her gaze to Daniel, “Don’t bother me for the rest of the night.” Then she closed the door in front of their faces.
He sighed at the behavior of his sister, “Your room’s next to mine.”
“How many rooms are there here?” Jia asked as she followed him to the next room.
“About twenty, I think, it used to be a boarding house. The rest of the pack have their rooms on the other side of the house, so don’t worry about them. They won’t be coming up here.” he assured her.
Daniel liked his privacy and therefore had claimed the bedroom farthest away from everyone else in his own private quarters. He had his own study, living area, and bedroom with a huge en suite leading onto another adjoining bedroom. Maybe he shouldn’t have put Jia so close, but he couldn’t bear for her to be far away.
“Oh. Okay,” Jia replied as she stepped into the bedroom. “Wow.” she breathed, taking it all in.
The room wasn’t much. There was a giant double bed in the center of the far wall, facing a massive window with red silk curtains to match the bedsheets. Huge oak closets and a cream couch were taking up the rest of the room. Daniel didn’t think the room was very special, but Jia was looking at everything in awe.
“This is mine?” she asked disbelievingly.
“If you want it,” Daniel replied honestly. “There’s an en suite bathroom that’s shared with my room, so I’ll apologize in advance because I do tend to sing in the shower.” he laughed nervously as Jia smiled warmly at him.
“It’s perfect,” she replied, heading to stare out of the window.
Her face was glowing beautifully in the subtle moonlight, eyes an emerald green that Daniel will never forget, her skin decorated with blemishes that didn’t lessen her beauty, and she had the most kissable lips Daniel had ever seen.
“I’m going to go for a run,” he announced. “Let you get some sleep. I’ll see you in the morning.” He smiled and turned to leave. “Night, Jia.”
“Goodnight, Dan,” Jia replied, nickname rolling off her tongue effortlessly.
Daniel needed to get out, to shift, and let his wolf run wild for a bit. If he didn’t then, he was afraid he’d end up molesting Jia in her sleep, and that couldn’t happen.
He had no idea why he felt so strongly for this girl, his whole world had been tilted on its axis and he just sat back and let it happen. He needed to talk to Sarah. She was the only person who was willing to tell Daniel what to do with Jia honestly.
Following her scent, he found her by her favorite rose bush now, in her wolf form, gazing at the stars.
He turned his head towards the house and saw Jia in her bedroom, knowing if he started talking to Sarah here, Jia would hear every word.
Making a quick decision, he peeled out of his shirt, dropped his jeans and underwear before quickly shifting. His body changed shape effortlessly after all these years, bones reforming and fur covering every inch of his skin.
Daniel had never really seen his wolf. He knew he was a deep chocolate color and had white paws, but other than that, he didn’t really have a clue. He didn’t exactly care either. Daniel was a tall guy, and that was shown in his wolf, making him significantly bigger than other werewolves, his alpha status increasing his size even more. It didn’t really help him be stealthy, but it gave him immense power.
Sarah turned her head towards him, ears perking up at his presence before she chuffed gently in greeting. Rubbing her head against Daniel’s neck in affection, catching Jia’s eye where she stood in the window before turning her attention back to Daniel.
” So… Jia, huh?” she asked.
Werewolves can communicate through telepathic messages. It helps them work out strategies while hunting and just gives them general privacy if they want to talk alone. Daniel has never been more thankful for it than he was now.
Daniel sighed, lying his huge body down next to his sister and resting his head on his paws.”Am I that obvious?"
”Just a tad,” Sarah’s wolf was almost grinning at him.”She’s your mate, isn’t she?”
Typical Sarah always knew everything on Daniel’s mind.”I think so.” he replied sadly.
”Daniel, you found your mate… why aren’t you happy?” she tilted her head in question. Her wolf was a similar color to Daniel, though smaller and much more agile than Daniel would ever be. Power was on his side, but he was also a bit of a klutz sometimes.
”Because she doesn’t know anything about us, Sarah, she doesn’t even know what a mate is." that was Daniel’s main problem.
Jia didn’t have a clue what she was feeling towards Daniel. Daniel knew he was feeling drawn to his mate, but to Jia, she was controlled by feelings that she didn’t understand.
”Do you want her as your mate?”
Daniel snorted, stupid question really.”Of course I do.”
”Then teach her everything, let her know what she’s feeling, and then let her make her mind up. You know that if you ignore your feelings for too long then they’ll become uncontrollable. Think how confusing it will be for Jia if she has no idea what’s going on.” Sarah gently butted her head against his. Something she had done since she was a pup to show her affection to Daniel.
He sighed once more.”You’re right. I should talk to her. Tell her everything.”
”I’m always right,” she replied smugly before shifting into her human form, “Now I mean it. Don’t bother me for the rest of the night.” She grabbed a robe on the bench next to the rose bush, effectively ending the conversation.
Daniel swiftly rose to his feet and bounded off into the woods. A run would clear his head, make him tired enough just to sleep when he got back. A run would fix everything. It always did.
Almost always…
